Help Battery use - checking the resources

So I checked my Battery Use and it shows Android System at 71%. What determines this and how do I get it to go down? The phone is only a day old and I haven't installed any apps yet. I just have gmail (mail, calendar, contacts) on auto-sync as well as an exchange email on HTC Mail on auto-sync.

Please help me understand how this all works.

Thanks!

That's pretty normal if you haven't been doing anything with the phone. Click on "Android System" in the usage screen to see what it includes. Mine is usually the top one unless I've been wearing out the camera or something.

Cell standby and Phone idle are always my top 2.

Right now I have 34% Cell Standby, 31% Phone Idle and 18% Android System. Granted, I have barely used my phone at all today, but that's usually the order even with higher usage.

For me:
Android System: 28%
Wi-Fi: 23%
Cell Standby: 23%
Phone idle: 18%
Display: 8%
