Be honest - it's shite !

hey dude if yo dont want to make some pesses to make a call use the direct dial, choose one of the left or right even front screens to assign a contact and just press it and its just one press to call ... choose it like a widget on direct access just a tip,, and of course xperia kick asses even with 1.6 os, honestly posted

Done that for my oft called contacts, it's when you want to call someone else it's a pain. A minor niggle, I'm not so time poor I can't afford a couple of extra presses now & then, just seems convoluted. The i7500 was more direct but don't know if that was stock android or a Samsung thing. Hopefully SE will strip things back a bit in future updates?

Not keen on the screen swipe nonsense & protracted steps to make a call but everything else is just sublime in comparison.

Have you tried Gesture Search... draw first letter of contact you want to call with finger (second and third if you need to narrow it down) then press green handset by their name. I find it very quick and it gives you all their numbers separately so you can instantly pick home, work or mobile.

I have.... but as it doesn't tell you which phone it is, i.e. home, work, mobile, I'll have to start remembering everyone's numbers again, all a bit 20th century!

Good point, hadn't thought of that... I guess my number of contacts is small enough that I know which ones what. Perhaps I should get off the forums and go make some more friends!!

Getting short sighted with advancing age doesn't help. That & clinging to the contact details of people not seen in years... just in case.

I found a great little app last night called "contact analyzer" quickly allows you to delete duplicate contacts and merge contacts.

As for differentiating numbers, it shouldn't be that difficult between mobile and landline. The real problem is between work & home. Fortunately for me, I don't have any work numbers stored other than where I work. Now I just have to remember when calling, which number is which! lol

Back to a problem note, I've noticed that since I've been posting more on this I've had more problems with my phone (hopefully just a coincidence). Earlier on, I got a text message and when I went to the notification bar, it didn't come down and just stopped part-way. Then I got some home error message and asked if I'd like to force close or wait. I selected wait, and it just fixed itself. Anyone else encounter this? It's never happened before, hasn't happened again since.

while waiting for the company i signed up with to straighten things out or let me out of my newly signed contract...i told many of my issues that are part theft by the salesperson and misinformation or lying.
the other half is the lemon i got.
it is getting worse by the day.
i already have spoke at length about forced shutdowns the unit does on its own..inability to use apps like google maps due to shutdowns mid directions and now...
it is force closing like mad and rebooting..then before it fully opens up..reboots again.
the guy at the carrier in the tech dept did a complete wash and reinstall and its no better. as he left the shop and i did too, i realized it had crashed before his car left the lot.
now i cannot make phone calls, most calls cut out either right away..or a few minutes in...and when i say cut out..i dont mean service...i mean the phone shuts itself down.

today i did the 20th restore and it did not load my contacts, so i went in again and just ticked off contacts.
well they were back now? odd...but wait!!!!!
a half hr later go to make a call...and the contacts are half there..half missing?
my best friend back home..and someone i work with...was missing and i could not remember his cell...from laziness of having it programmed.

so i tried reinstalling again from a restore on sd card and now it only gives me like...10 numbers and contacts out of the 40 i had?
it even combined some...putting a phone call i received from a delivery guy...into my contacts under someone elses name and number??

it just gets whackier and wackier.
even if i wanted another android i have to wait a mth...they dont want to give me another x10 unless i am keeping it for sure..which i would think most would understand would be a hesitation on my part.

Does anyone have any advice for anything i have not tried yet to get it working? or is it beyond? i have done the sony pc companion repair a bunch of times, i have reset it using phone numberous times. I have reset it using phone to restore to factory.

any ideas outside of a hammer? if at least to get me thru the mth to get a different phone?

It certainly sounds to me like that phone is defective. It could also be the SD card causing some memory corruption. Have you tried another SD card (or don't you have one?)? I now have three X10s on my account (AT&T) and none of them have had any real problems and definitely nothing like you have experienced.

I would suggest debranding and running a generic rom but I'm not sure you'd be comfortable with that and you would have to undo it to return it anyway. Personally, I would place my bet on a replacement and then just sell it if it didn't work out. It's very easy to do that with AT&T. I have 4 devices and getting upgrades has never been difficult. It sounds like your provider sucks comparatively.

Lol (whilst sitting in school car park.. other parents now very worried about mad woman in silver car)

i might have another card in a camera i have, i will dig that out to try. thx

then you have to install a fabulous great app called spelldial it works for you

I must admit, from reading this thread, I've noticed a common denominator. Most of the complaints regarding the handset seem to be users living in the US/Canada, whereas those in Europe have smaller problems in comparison, mostly network related.

Just an observation! :D

Very precise one, I must say - we are much more clueless yet loudmouthed. We immediately moan and whine and get loud about everything especially if it involves anything that starts with "learning..." - nation of whiners, that's what we are now.
Not all is lost, we just have to kick ourselves in the arse and get the clueless-lazy kids back to real schools but unfortunately this hilarious "sense of entitlement" is very apparent in this topic, indeed. :(

Dude, it's the same on this side of the pond only it's more network. Take for example sharkhark even tho he's having problems with his network provider, he's had terrible luck with his handsets (yes plural!) on the other hand, I've not had much problems other than vodafone being rubbish, to the point where yesterday after work when i switched my phone on I had 3 bars on my signal but couldn't connect to them even tho it was available in the network list. I had to keep switching it off & remove battery & Sim card. Took me 20 mins to sort!

Well, first post on the Android forums and well, i didn't really want it to be in this topic

BUT I MUST AGREE

with all the X10 users out there that find the phone to be nowhere near shite - i've had mine since launch in the UK - and although i am on my second handset (the first was exchanged because it would not connect to Twitter - which i later discovered to be a setting on Twitter not the phone) i can honestly say i have no major problems

Currently on R2BA026 and the touch screen is responsive, even with InvisiSHIELD on it - the screen rotates when i want it to, the stock keyboard responds when i press and hell, its WAY better than the K750, K800i, K850, C905, Satio that i've had before it

I'm not a hater of the iPhone either - however i am a hater of Apple's policy - if a phone is there for the user experience then the user should be able to choose how to use the phone, one thing i love with my X10

So parting shot - roll on the 2.1 upgrade, roll on the development of 2.2 - 3.0 and maybe a next gen handset. Till then, let me update twitter from timescape, let me direct dial from the homescreen, while playing youtube on a stable wifi connection, let me email on the move and god, please let me customize the ringtones for everyone

many thanks

P.S. i have thought of a fault - the inability to remove ANY app that you want - mainly MOXIER lol

:D

well mines recently decided to randomly shut down. no reason for it, it just dies and i need to restart, and lately its been doing this neat little thing where i make a call and cant hear it ringing, only when that person picks up can i sometimes hear them. not always, and they can sometimes hear me. awesome right. im waitng for 2.1 to come out. if it doesnt resolve most of these issues im gonna buy an htc or galaxy s as i hear its the cats ass, unlock the bitch, get rogers to send me a refurb of this thing as theyre good at replacing phones due to complaints and then selling this crap on ebay.

i keep trying to like the phone, maybe my expectations are just too high for it who knows. maybe i have bad luck with phones, hell maybe expecting a phone to not randomly lag while roaming through the menu and to not freeze up while trying to redial a number and to actually show me its dialing a number instead of just freezing is too much to ask for. lol.

@mrwomble quick question, how do you find the invisibleshield? I got the full 1 & after only a few months have found most panels are peeling off. I've not been too worried about the ones protecting the casing but now the 1 on the screen is starting to come away

this is my second invisible shield covered phone, i work with dust and i found the one on my blackberry had yellowed up al ittle from it over time. other than that it kept the phone protected but it ended up getting scratched twice. i have one on the x10 aswell because it doesnt have a case and i saw a hair line scratch in the screen after a week or so of use.

Honestly??? No it isn't shite. It's just a victim of the stupid marketing practices rife in the mobile industry.

Unlike some poor souls, I haven't had any hardware issues, and I reckon the hardware is pretty awesome. 5 years ago my desktop machine didn't have the specs my phone has!! (well, not quite, but you know what I mean :) )

At the end of the day, the things which annoy me (and they REALLY do) are actually quite small. The reason I am aware of them is that I am using my X10 all the time. Because it is, quite frankly, a pretty amazing object in its own right (as I think all smartphones are).

So yeah, it has bugs, but they aren't intentional. What amazes me is the stuff which Sony did on PURPOSE.

"Poxier" Mail, the app that WILL NOT DIE, 'Tediouscape', which is utterly useless, and worst of all 'GrimeScape', which, quite frankly, has NO PURPOSE AT ALL!! If I want to read what everyone is doing on Facebook, then surely to God I can launch the Facebook app! Can't remember who called me yesterday? Well, shit, that's what the call log is for!! (et cetera ad nauseam)

FYI Sony, pointlessly reimplementing the functionality of software I already have REALLY REALLY BADLY is not the hallmark of genuine innovation, nor does it make me a happy bunny.

So why do they do it? Why can I not buy a phone that comes with stock Google Android that I can update whenever I like the look of a new release? I mean after sales care is a terrible drain of resources, and you could in one fell swoop, make all software issues Google fault surely?

(After all, I have had many Sony Ericsson phones in the past, and can categorically state they can't write software for shit.)

Oh yeah I remember why, because if I'm not reminded every 5 minutes that Sony Ericsson made my phone I might forget! But unfortunately, all the things that remind me of that fact generally make me go "WHY SONY?? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WHY!!" - which seems just slightly counter productive at the least.

In short, I think 2.1 will fix all my problems. But I'm not waiting for a Sony update, I'm waiting for someone to crack the damn bootloader. Because then I can load the software that I choose onto the pocket computer I own. Just like every other computer I have ever owned. And if I don't like whats available, then hell, I can learn C and change anything I want. Huzzah for Open Source.

So yeah, do I use it 50 times a day? Yes. Do I do that because it is shite? No.

But do I think the guys who actually designed it cringe every time they are reminded what the marketing department decided to do? Hell yes. Its an embarrassment.

P.S. And as for multitouch I couldn't care less. Ever seen someone try and use an iPhone with one hand? Laughable!! At least I can hold my X10 like a phone (which it is) and still use it with just my thumb.

P.P.S Just in case you are reading this and the bootlader has been cracked... please let me know!!

Dude, you sound like my pal Pete! ha ha

I'm in agreement with most of your points, except Timescape/Mediascape. Granted, I know I'm in the minority here but I like them. Sometimes I'll use Realplayer instead of Mediascape, but I love Timescape and I actually get annoyed if I come out of work and thanks to Vodafone, it's not updated in like 4 hours. Maybe it's cos I'm an attention seeker and I like to see all the messages, tweets etc I get! lol

I also use RealPlayer in preference to MediaScape. However, I more or less view this as concrete proof of how awful MediaScape actually is, I haven't really forgiven Real Networks for the abomination of Real Player 7!!

As for TimeScape.. perhaps part of the problem is that where I work is practically a Faraday Cage. Its the telecommunications equivalent of the Black Hole of Calcutta in there. Seriously!!

P.S. Just on the off chance, that's not Pete Bennet you're referring to is it? Re-reading my post I definitely sound like him!

P.P.S how's the weather over in Glesga?
