Beats, Advanced Rhythm Game

no, if I pause the game, it pauses, then skips ahead as though I hadn't even paused. The stores fly by wicked fast and the song resumes where it would have been if I hadn't paused.

For ex...

I pause at 1:15
Wait 0:15
Hit menu again to unpause
song resumes at 1:30

alright, I downloaded another music paxk and got it synced properly now. I had to set arrow position to lower, and have music come -0.25s, but it's perfect now! Even the included songs are synced.

On the downloaded song packs, pause works correctly, but not the included songs... Weird...

edit, pause is working right now, too.

oh man no support for .dwi yet. still pretty good

edit: will you ever make a fancy ui for song browsing and previews like in stepmania? some kinda wheel for selecting songs. i know thats probably pretty far off if youre thinking about it. also when this gets out of beta will it be a paid app? i wouldnt mind a paid version if it gets rid of ads

I'd pay $3-5 for this, most definitely. :)

More if it had in-app downloads, market downloadable song-packs, and not having to adjust timings manually (Maybe have user select device, and auto-adjust based on device)

In-app "downloading" and installing is complete right now and will be integrated for the next version (for a sneak peak of how it'll look like, point your phone to Downloads - BeatsIIDX and imagine that every Download button leads to install - of course more songs will be added over time other than that one anime pack). The only problem right now is file hosting - I bought a small MediaFire Pro account just for direct downloading, but its only 100GB/month bandwidth and I suspect that will be eaten up very, very fast. Unless we find someone willing to donate free direct download space or we get a large donation of sort to buy dedicated servers, I don't think directly downloadable songs in the long term will be possible (and no, I highly doubt Google or any other method of "Downloadable Content" will allow us to add songs for legal reasons). That said, for the next release, I'll probably also add in a Donate version which is just $5 and with no ads (but exactly identical to the normal free version who's ads are for paying for the website).

As for auto-timing adjustments, how can I set presets if I don't have data to work off of xD If the community wants convenient device-specific defaults, someone needs to take initiative and go out there to convince people to start submitting defaults data so I can add them to some first-time-setup wizard. If you want to take the initiative, feel free to start a thread at http://forums.beatsiidx.com/ and get people to start posting numbers ; )

As for the fancy UI, UI is not my forte (as you probably can tell) but yes, its definitely something I want to add in the future. A pretty big task though, so its priority is behind many of the other things in this To-Do list: To-Do List, Changelog and Development Progress - BeatsIIDX

After almost two months of development, Beats 1.4b has finally been released!

Combined.png

New songs, easy song downloading, improved .sm file support, stability, and a much, MUCH nicer UI.

Check it out at http://beatsportable.com/ (release thread here)

I love this game, I have spent many hours playing then downloaded the update this morning and got sucked in and caused me to be late for work :D. For those having problems with multitouch on holds or jumps you can change the settings to exclude these. I have a moto droid and multitouch is broken, it will register one touch then the other and jump back and forth between the two. It is very easy to find sim files online for the game, just google stepmania sim files. I would like to see a local high score implemented on this game and I would also like to see an app that was able to create sim files on the phone itself.

Beats 1.5b has TONS of new features, as described in the Changelog. Some of the most important features include:

  • osu! Mod and scroll up game modes
  • various new tapbox layouts
  • much, MUCH faster now and with less lag (even faster than 1.3b!)
  • lots of nifty shortcut buttons on the main menu
  • Russian, Dutch, and Italian translations (looking for translators, see here)

Not sure what this new "osu! Mod" game mode is all about? Check it out in the new gameplay video below:

Beats 1.5.2b - URGENT UPDATE!

keripo said:
Due to some Google policies, Beats has been re-released under a new package name (now 'com.beatsportable.beats' - its the same app, just a different Market download).

qrcode.png

Please uninstall previous versions of Beats (aka 1.5b or earlier) and install the new package (just search for "keripo", "advanced rhythm game", "stepmania", "ddr", or "osu"). The donate version has also been removed - please use the Donate page if you wish to express thanks and help keep development rolling!

Because the Android Market will treat 1.5.2b as a new app, all previous ratings and comments will have been wiped, so go ahead and 5-star the new Beats and don't forget to tell your friends to update! If you're interested in helping with development testing or would like to help with translations (looking for Korean/Japanese/Chinese translators specifically), check out the Google group!

Beats 1.6b now out, with .dwi support, .osu support, local high score saving, built-in screenshot mode, and more!

Download from Download
Read below or at Beats 1.6b
After many weeks of inactivity, I finally got a chance to sit down and crank out code for a while. As a result, there have been tons of MAJOR changes/features added in Beats 1.6b. Here's just half of the changes:

The long promised .dwi support is finally here and complete (as far as my testing has gone at least). SM->osu! Mod has been done back in 1.5b, but now real .osu files can be used as input with osu!->SM pretty much complete (sliders and spinners aren't yet added though and direct beatmap downloading support from osu! - rhythm is just a click away will require some peppy poking). High scores are saved locally per stepfile and difficulty level, and screenshots can be taken by pausing the game while having the Screenshot Mode setting enabled. As well, thanks to the hard work of all the volunteer translators at crowdin, Beats is now officially available in 12 different languages (but of course, you can make that grow)!

There's only been a few minor graphical changes, but here's a few random 1.6b screenshots for eyecandy:

LOVE & ROLL - generated osu!->SM || Bad Apple - real osu! data || Bad Apple - high score!

Whats next? If you haven't heard already, I am planning on doing a COMPLETE REWRITE of Beats over the summer/fall, tentatively called Beats2. Not only will it be OPEN SOURCE (modified BSD license) and rewritten with many of the wanted features on the ToDo list but it will be designed with customization and game mode flexibility in mind. New to the rhythm game scene and only know Guitar Hero? Beats2 will have it - guitar mode. Old-school and just want to Beatmania IIDX it up? No problem - beats mode. Prefer imported games? Lucky for you, I'm a fan of Project Diva and Jubeat! A side/parallel project that I'm very interested in is attempting my hands at an actual rhythm analyzer library for helping generate stepfiles directly from music in your library (think DancingMonkey, cept for more than just StepMania).

Beats2 is a distant long-term project at the moment, so what about Beats? Following Beats 1.6b, I will probably be experimenting with adding various features here and there listed in the "Experimenting with Beats 1.7b" section of the ToDo list.
