Bedside dock is NOT needed

Unless you want to pay $29.95 for a dock to rest your phone in while it charges, you can get all of the features with out the dock. Just install the Dockrunner app in the market. Its free. It will give you the alarm clock, weather report and options to play music, and slide show. Once you activate that screen it will lock you out from everything else on the phone. So you go to your Notifications panel and select Dockrunner again to deactivate it and it will send you back to your home screen again.

BTDT ... this is way old information. But let's run with it. Sure DockRunner gives you somewhat of an alarm clock app ... but without the dock tipping the DROID right at you, it's not as useful. AND, the dock charges your phone. Dock runner ... no so much.

Now let's compare DR to Bedside. Bedside also gives you 4 convenient buttons on the screen that can be programmed for whatever apps you want to use with them . . . very handy, very cool (i.e. any alarm clock app you choose, Pandora, Sleep Timer, etc..). And Bedside has a flashlight mode, another handy feature next to your bed.

And for you rooted folks ... the dev of Bedside also created LEDs Hack. That app turns OFF those pesky LED lights so you can actually use your DROID as an alarm clock without keeping your entire room lit up like a lighthouse.

Lastly, if you don't like that rude charging LED (which the OEM dock solves, just BTW), you can always put an O-Ring around your charging cable and block the LED. Problem solved. ;)

yes, there are a few dock running apps. I like dock simulator more, myself.

I actually think this is much more useful than DockRunner. :)

Dock Simulator (also from the dev of Bedside and LEDs Hack ;) ) taps you into either the Multimedia app or CarDock app. Very cool. A great app for people who want to use the CarDock app without buying the OEM car dock.

Car Home is already included with the Droid and can be used without buying the OEM dock.

True ... but you need Dock Simulator if you're going to use LEDs Hack without either of the docks. Car Home will work, but those LEDs will be blinding you as you drive at night. Annoying. :(

Without some type of cradle to hold it DockRunner and Bedside are pointless. You can always build one yourself or get a cheaper one from Seido or that other site Droid accessories or whatever its called.

If you do a power cycle and put the Droid in the dock immediately, the soft key lights will not come on.

Yep. I have a thread around here somewhere that walks you through that "procedure". But soon as you touch the Brightness control, on come the LEDs.

Just to let you know... this ENTIRE thread is completely pointless. When 2.1 is released... and it will be very soon... the clock app can be entered just like any other app. There will be no need for random hacks or 3rd party software. You also won't need any sort of brightness hacks to make it actually dark.

Yeah... but Redundant threads are usually better. At least this wasn't another one about why 2.1 didn't come yesterday.

I dont see how it's pointless if people get to see those 4 nice pics you posted and they didn't know about that feature of the new night alarm app in 2.1.

Helpful images, those :)

aah, my young padawan, that is the exact reason I said this thread was pointless and posted the pictures.

There are quite a few apps currently in use that won't be needed anymore once 2.1 drops.

Hah, I wish I were young. Damn receding hairline keeps reminding me that isn't the case though :)

I found a very inexpensive and nice looking holder for Droid on your night stand. Just get a small decorative plate holder for about five bucks. Works great. This way you don't have to take your case off to dock the droid. Anyway, works for me.
