Hey, I just recently upgraded from an iphone 4 to the galaxy s2 and I was wondering how to root it. I understand that rooting is the equivalent to jailbreaking an iphone but I am completely lost as I a beginner with rooting so any help would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Android Forum Tazzy8. :)

The best place to start with rooting is this sticky by Slug:-

To be able to root your phone follow the instructions contained in this post here:-

CF-Root v4.1

[19.10.2011][CF-Root 4.4] KE*, KF*, KG1/2/3/5/6/7, KH1/3/4, KI2/3/4/8 - su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers

After rooting you can then browse the various ROM's in the sticky to get a feel for what appeals to you.

Hope this helps. :D

read around lots and understand what you're doing, and following the instructions - problems only arise if you deviate!!

there are 2 common methods of rooting, the superoneclick and CF (chainfire) - use CF-root, there seem to be recurrent issues with the other.

Not exactly. I'm not familiar with iOS but my understanding from talking to users is that jailbreaking is most often done to allow either UI customisation or installation of apps from other than the App Store. Android is much more flexible on both scores to begin with.

Perhaps if you explain what you want to do with your handset, we could advise whether rooting is actually required? It's not something to be taken lightly so I wouldn't want you to do it unless it's necessary. :)
