Being on a call boosts my data signall...

You heard me right. Let me lay out some geography for a better understanding of my situation.

We have towns A, B, and C.
Town A and C are about 15mi apart. Town B is right in between them.
I live in town B. I work in town C.
Town A got 4g coverage last week. Town B is close enough that it got coverage, too.

So, since I live in town B, that means I have a 4g connection at home. This is neat, but doesn't really do me much good since I'm on WiFi when I'm at home. What I want most is to have it while I'm at work. Unfortunately, the day it was enabled, I was watching my phone as I drove to work as the the bars slowly dropped one by one. The last bar dropped and it switched back to 3g less than a quarter mile away from where I work. While sitting at work, the phone will try to latch onto it once it a while, but it never actually gets a connection.

Now here's where it gets weird. The other night, I was talking to a friend over the phone. When I looked down at my Bionic, I noticed that I suddenly had a 4g connection and it was 4 bars. I was thinking, "Sweet! They must have recently rigged some towers nearby." I opened up my browser and sure enough, I had an active 4g connection. However, as soon as I got off the phone, the signal dropped and it switched back to 3g again.

This is where I stand now. I don't know why, but for some reason, whenever I am on a call, I have a strong 4g connection in a place where I would otherwise not have one at all. I don't know what is going on in the phone that is making this possible, but it's happening.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Not off the top of my head. My only guess is that the tower that you're actually connecting to patches you in (similarly as a repeater does) to the tower in the 4g area, and thus you all of a sudden have 4g/LTE available for the duration of the call....
