I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace and have installed Kies, which is constantly erroring and I'm fed up with it.
I want to find the best backup/restore available, given that my next phone may not be a Samsung i.e. the simplest backup system that is independent of maker.
I need to be able to backup contacts (not Google please!), calendar, events, memo etc. Backup should be top PC.
Tried SnapPea, but that did not do memos.

Thanks Argedion

Tried both.

MyPhoneExplorer - doesn't sync data from "memo" app

Carbon - is not compatible with my device

Thanks Adauth.
I'm new to smartphone technology. What does "rooted" mean and how do I check whether I am or not?

Rooted means you have root access to your device. Also if you have to ask, you're not rooted. ;)
Search the forums there is countless knowledge about what "rooting" is. Also it's benefits, risk, and how to do it. Just search you'll find all the info you could want.

Kies is big, bulky and not needed except for official rom updates. The Samsung USB driver can be installed separately to your computer/pc and kies uninstalled.

I use several methods for backup.I take my SD card out and copy it's contents from time-to-time to to my laptop using an a cheap micro-SD adapter into my SD slot on the laptop.
Before doing so I use the free Mobile II app to back up my Calendar and contacts.

As I have rooted my GT 5830i I also use CWM(Clockwork Mod Recovery) to make a system backup of the phone and,"Galaxy Toolbox" app to back up my IMEI number and partition.

For quick smaller file transfers/backups I just use Bluetooth to my Laptop.

For getting around the phone/files I use the great and free,"Es File Explorer.

HTH :)

I second and third the suggestions you will need to root in order to meet your expectations , keep in mind you will need to root your new device to restore your app and associated backups on your new device.
