Help Best Buy Black Tie Protection Plan?

Had bb protection on my last 3 vm phones... Blackberry, intercept, now optimus. Bb and intercept were exchanged on the spot at the store when minor issues were proven. Exchange meant that plan was fulfilled, so had to buy a new plan with each phone. My wife had multiple phones as well, and recently exchanged the intercept for the triumph, paying the price difference. Basically we pay for the plan because we've always had problems, and the newer phones keep coming to vm. The only problem I had was when one store refused an exchange because they didnt see a problem, but a different store exchanged it right away. Make sure you tell them you want the plan on the new phone. They track the number of plans they sell.

Plans are different for prepaid and contract phones...atleast that's what my BB said.

cpht, they told me when I got a new triumph after my first stopped charging that my plan was still good and i had the remainder of the two years on the original plan. I said is this plan specific to the phones individual number? (Forgot the resale term for that number.) They said nope, it's SKU number, so no need to buy another plan after one replacement.

I also did not realize that you had unlimited returns the first year (for issues). That's how I got my Intercept traded in for a Triumph. (I thought you only got one, but the lady was like "Just bring the cable and I'll get you another one, or you can get whatever else on the floor, if it cost more you pay the difference."

So I ended up getting my Triumph for only 115 after tax. 10% off, 200 from my intercept, and the 40? bucks for the protection plan. I've already had to turn in one phone... and this one could go right back in if I so desired. But... I'll wait for VM's next phone, or I'll wait for a good batch of the Triumph's. Besides, this phone is SO MUCH better than the Intercept, just sayin.

So i just tried to return a triumph with a small crack in the screen and was told that cracked screens are not covered in the black tie protection plan. DOes anyone know if this is true? If it is what should I do?

Best Buy Mobile employee here.

Wow. Cracked screen is absolutely covered by Black Tie Protection. If anyone in Best Buy tells you otherwise, raise hell up the chain until you get your service.

I see all kinds of misunderstandings in this thread (which may of course come from Best Buy employee confusion, too, when they explained things) so let me see if I can briefly clear up a few key points.

1. Black Tie Protection for your phone covers darned near everything except LOSS, THEFT, or FULL IMMERSION. I have even seen full immersion cases replaced when the phone was grabbed quickly out of the water; the phone is opened up and replacement is determined on a case-by-case basis.

2. Black Tie Protection IS NOT INSURANCE, and THERE IS NEVER ANY DEDUCTIBLE. That is why it is a higher monthly rate than phone company insurance, which almost always has a deductible.

3. YOU NEVER GET A NEW PHONE AS A REPLACEMENT. You will ALWAYS get a REFURBISHED PHONE. I can honestly tell you that with every refurbished phone I have seen, I have not been able to tell the difference compared to a new phone. If you can tell, you should say so.

4. I think some of you are mixing up elements of the Black Tie Protection Plan, and the Buy Back Plan. They are not the same thing.

5. You should pick a plan which is right for you and makes you happy! I personally do not want anyone to take Black Tie Protection when they neither want nor need it. We do not work on commission! I make the same amount of money whether I sell you an $800 iPhone or a $10 Go Phone, and whether you take Black Tie Protection or not. I also wish everyone (Best Buy employees included!) fully understood Black Tie Protection and how it works. I am sorry if anyone suffered because the elements were not clear.

6. This part is personal opinion. WE ARE ALL CARRYING $800 PHONES MADE OF GLASS AND CIRCUITRY. I feel insurance, and protection plans, are a form of legalized gambling. But with that $800 phone, and with as many of my friends as I have seen with cracked screens, I am hedging my bets.

7. I am not a Best Buy spokesman, and I really am a bottom-of-the-totem-pole, part-time, Best Buy Mobile employee (and it's not even my only job). NOTHING I say here is official or from the company, it's just my thoughts and opinions.

The End. :)

Back in march i purchased the samsung intercept and got the $29.99 insurance and the guy practically told me that it would cover everything except theft or loss as long as i still had the phone. and then my phone was messing up about a month ago and i took it in there to have it fixed because it was forceclosing everything restarting itself and so much more and i just couldnt do anything on it anymore.

The lady who i showed my phone and showed how slow it was being just told me to go into my apps and forceclose the ones im not using and i tried telling her i already do that but it only fixes is it temporarily for about 20 minutes she did not listen to me, so i asked if my phones screen was cracked if they would give me a replacement or a rebate for another phone. she said the protection doesnt even cover screen protection only a couple of things that would never matter and were not the reason i bought the insurance in the first place. SO to my understanding the insurance has been changed right under my feet and i no longer get what i actually paid for what a wonderful way to get ripped off and now im stuck with this terrible phone

I was told it was better than Sprint covered everything even lost/stolen, which would be of huge concern, and no deductible, never told about app your suppose to download, but I lost my phone and now I am stuck, Sprint would have charged $7 as best buy is $10, I would not mind deductible, and my daughter has had EVO 4g replace 3 times and phone is refurbished and it still doesnt work. I would not ever purchase again

I got this from the terms & conditions on the geeksquad website:

This Plan also provides for Accidental Damage
from Handling (ADH) coverage set forth in Section
E for Smartphones, Personal Digital Assistants

and Subscription Based Mobile Phones.

E. Accidental Damage from Handling Coverage
(ADH).

Customer Service used to mean a lot. You went to buy something and a salesperson met you, helped, and customers left with a feeling of accomplishment. Hell, I

Customer Service used to mean a lot....

You know you can get it replaced by VM for free and it takes only a couple of days? And they send you the new one before you have to send your old one back. Also all MT's have a bad touchscreen. Just saying. Maybe some people don't notice it, but it is there.

Also sadly what isn't made in China?

I bought the Triumph when it first came out and the sales rep at Best Buy convinced me to get the plan. A couple of weeks ago data just flat out stopped working on my phone. I called VM and after trouble shooting didn't help they said they'd contact with a solution. After waiting 4 business days, I just took my phone to Best Buy and they gave me a new Triumph within 20 mins and even helped me get it set up and ready to go. I personally find it quicker and easier.

My opinion on the best buy thing:

I don't have it, I'll flat out say that. However, my girlfriend did on her laptop. Her laptop died 3 times in the course of the warranty from them, and they gave her in-store credit for how much she paid for the laptop (Which was 4 years ago. They gave her full value.) And it did cover a lot. It was pretty sweet, knowing that I would determine if it was broken or not (She really doesn't know much about computers.) and we would take it to them for repair. Then the last time they said "Here's a credit for (X). Have fun shopping!" So really...I'd do it. Minus that I void warranties a lot by installing new OS's >_>
