OMG, now it all make sense why data prices will remain at $30 for Thunderbolt because well it only going to run 3G. Then Verizon will pull the stunt in summer that if you want 4G for your Thunderbolt, you will need to pay $XX (let's say $15) extra for 4G. Wow, what a bunch of crap. $45 or so for data only. No Way..

Wow, that is some speculation you've got there.
I doubt VERY much that they could do that remotely legal-like.

Edit: I will enjoy seeing this posted as a source on the blogs.

Never heard that before. Maybe she was confused with the xoom, I know it will be 3g a launched and upgraded to 4g later.

I'm checking my Verizon store tomorrow to see whats up, if there allowed to publicly tell customers that the date is the 24th, then i should find out for sure tomorrow at my location, I have a couple of friends there that i used to work with when they were working inside our Circuit City, they always told me stuff before it was made public, it was pretty neat how things worked with them. So hopefully they'll give me the info i and we all need

I'm still holding out for a Presidents Day launch pre-order event, if they were going to launch on Valentines Day, Presidents day is another holiday that has an excuse to have a launch or special "sale" of anything any more, you know like those retailers that have there "special presidents day sales event" lol Oh I love the 90's :P, Really? Its 2011? Man I must be going crazy, LOL!

ThunderBolt for President!

Sorry I didn't mean to speculate, I was just thinking of situation if Verizon release Thunderbolt with 3G only, what could happen. Take it with grain of salt.

Ah, i hope she really mean Xoom :)

Just saw a commercial for the Thunderbolt twice in one commercial segment while watching Smallville (don't judge me). I definitely think we'll be seeing this phone soon. It was The counting Lightning commercial and the release date just said coming soon.

Was posted over a week ago, and it's why the 24th rumor began to spread rapidly.(correct me if I'm wrong) Though it's reassuring to some, the guy never really states an OFFICIAL source, and this being the case it's just another rumor :\

so i just heard something new from my local verizon rep, and maybe this is old news, but it was a shock to me. first off, i prefaced with the fact that i was off-contract and was looking for the most advanced phone, which led her to ask, "are you talking about the thunderbolt?" she immediately said that they officially were allowed to go public with the the feb 24 launch date (this is near atlanta, fyi.) i asked why this wasn't published and she only speculated that it had to do with iphone sales.

after asking several questions about signal strength and 4g-related questions, she told me that on the 24th, the thunderbolt would be available, but would only run on the 3g cdma network until summer, when they would officially launch the mobile 4g lte network. this means that no matter where you are, the thunderbolt will only be 3g till some time this summer. she called it a "4g ready" phone, to be later upgraded to 4g.

did i miss this? i was under the impression that if you were in a 4g city, it worked at launch. i guess i was being overly optimistic...

You are copying and pasting this post on many threads-none having to do with the subject of the thread. Why didn't you start a new thread? I think you are a mole intentionally sowing disinformation. You are the source of the bs, not any verizon rep. Are you an idiot? How are the videos playing if not 4G? All the tech sites have had hands-on reviews!!! You think no one would notice? What do you take all the members here for-stupid imbeciles who don't know bs when they see it? For all I know, you are a spam machine. I hope admin will check into it.

Exactly. Over the last couple weeks I keep seeing people say such-and-such a site "confirmed" the Thunderbolt's release date. BGR can't confirm the date, Phandroid can't confirm the date, even BestBuy can't confirm the date. Only VERIZON can confirm the launch date.

Until then, any supposed release date is not confirmation, it's just speculation. At this point I'm just going to do my best to think about other things until I know the exact date as confirmed by Verizon. Obviously I'm failing miserably at that because here I am posting.

oh my God, please Verizon an announcement would be nice....

Verizon removes Skype Video from HTC Thunderbolt? ? Cell Phones & Mobile Device Technology News & Updates | Geek.com

that adds up to what HTC did recently to the ThunderBolt page, if you haven't noticed, both the hotspot and Skype references are gone.

http://www.htc.com/us/products/thunderbolt-verizon#overview

Notice how the "exclusively at Verizon Wireless" at the top is now gone too

I'm afraid we've run into another Droid Incredible launch... :(

I just want it all to end.... theres one new article about the ThunderBolt a day on average... and there mostly negative...

Wait I thought skype was throughly built into Sense on the Thunderbolt?

it is to an extent but it still accesses the app, kinda how the clock widget accesses the deskclock, if the app isn't there it won't function, sense is baked in merely as a shortcut with integration to the app, and HTC said about doing that to more apps in the future.

earlier leaks said Skype wouldn't be available at launch and would be replaced with a coming soon icon placeholder when launching the app
the thing here is, Verizon might be tired of all the complaints, rumors/speculation and demand and is trying to get the phone out ASAP so there removing the app all-together until its ready.

Same with the hotspot, but i could care less about it...

I can imagine alot of "dumb" people calling Verizon to complain why there app says "coming soon" when they paid good money for the device and want it to be fully functional etc.

working in the world of retail, you get those kinds of people for those little things, I think Verizon is just thinking ahead on this one
I just want all the speculation / news / release date rumors to end soon... I want the ThunderBolt as much as anybody here but this is beyond ridiculous, its starting to make me sick seeing a pic of it on any news blog...

The ThunderBolt by HTC is a hardware device that runs software. Software can be updated. Even if software isn't on a phone at launch, you can add it in later. You can bet your sweet smartphone that CM will work on a way of adding it into their ROM. Be cool and stop panicking. Let's just get this little toy in our hands and then worry about the little things.

PS - This is the US. Who do you know that uses Skype anyway?

I have to say, if there is anyone to believe it is Geller. BGR is a phone ninja, and if you know the mobile community, and how he sold BGR for out a katrillion ba-ballion dollars :p his word is pretty much gold. I will say things may have changed since the 10th when that was posted, but he never says anything unless he knows for sure.

Right now my money is on the 24th.

yeah just like Droid Incredible gained Wifi N with a software update just as the ThunderBolt will gain Bluetooth 3.0 when its available (as seen on the product page). I know about the software updates, i'm not really that dumb, i didn't mention it because this being a forum of android fans / advanced users familiar with software updates, i didn't mention it

I could care less about Skype too, video chat isn't a feature i'll be using anyway

I was just trying to allay some of the doom and gloom.

If it makes anyone feel any better, Skype is still listed as a feature on Verizon's 4G website 4G LTE Network | Verizon Wireless

I say everyone on here with a twitter account should start flooding Verizon's with "Launch the ThunderBolt already"

that'll get there attention lol

@VerizonWireless

I've been trolling them for 2 weeks. This week I started adding the #Vaporware tag to anything I tweet containing the #Thunderbolt tag

If they are shipping this already, how are they removing Skype? If this is really a last minute decision then this would have had to been done by now. If Skype isn't there they would have had to make that decision a while ago and planned on a software upgrade at launch to add it. If that is the case, why not just release it as planned and add the upgrade when available.

To me, Skype problems wouldn't delay a phone that is in this late stage of development. It has to be a more critical component such as the 4g hand off as others have suggested.

As far as the data plans go, I could see the scenario where you will have 3g at launch and you can opt into 4g if you want at a higher price point. That will allow them to have the higher data rate, but yet still not upset people if the 4g isn't in their area yet. If they really did want a higher price, this would be the best way to implement it.

i am teh spammbot, here for your thunderboltz.

come on, man. there is no need to be rude. i said that this was to be taken with a grain of salt, since it was an isolated report. or better yet -- don't take it at all. this is what i was told. like i said, maybe she was crazy or misinformed. i hope it's all false, but just thought i should throw out a caution, just in case.

we'll see in a week or so if she was way off and i am an "idiot". i hope, for mine and everyone elses sake (even yours, mr. grump), that she's wrong.

Long time lurker, first time poster, but I have a theory....

I too have been following the progress of the tbolt and preordered the very first day it was available to do so way back when the 14th was the supposed launch date.
I remember reading quite a few blogs coming out right after CES saying how Skype functionality wouldn't be ready until the 28th. I wish I could find the blogs to back this up, It may have even been in some of the hands on video's....but this could be where this date has come from. I'm thinking the launch date may not necessarily have been "pushed back" but this is the date for Skype functionality. Maybe the 28th is the "update day" instead of the "launch day"
As far as an official launch "date". did anyone ever think that different stores get their shipments different days of the week? The in stock date (or whatever Jay called it) is the 21st. Different stores could get the device any time next week starting with the 21st depending on when your store gets their usual deliveries. Even if it were a FedEx drop shipment like Jay talked about earlier in the thread, those could possibly be different days of the week depending on the store.....Maybe next week is the launch week???

Jay, if you could please, not sure when your working next but just keep us updated with any other info over the weekend! The fact that you have given proof in the form of pic's of the Sunday ad and the computer RSS make be believe you more then anyone else!

Here's the link from Phandroid posted Feb 9th, way before even the supposed original launch date
