Hi there,
I just found this forum and appreciate Jay's willingness to share his knowledge at BB. Here are 2 more data points from the San Francisco Bay area:
1) I went into the Verizon corporate store today (2/20) and they had no idea when the TB would be ready. "We don't know and we typically only know the day before." They didn't know anything about the pricing, the data plans, etc. When I questioned them about the potential inventory, they said typically, they have 100 in stock, but can depend on the launch forecast. She told me if I showed up on the launch day (I told her I wouldn't be able to do that until after work), I should be able to buy one and take it out of the store that day. They don't have a waiting list set up.
2) I went to the BB a couple of blocks away, again on 2/20. They only had the $249.99 price of the phone (from the ad in the paper), but didn't know the price of the data plan or the presumed launch date. They had also heard rumors of 2/24 or 2/28, but had not heard anything officially. They told me they had 12 pre-orders so far.
The sales guy said they should have a good quantity on hand, but the best advice was the call the day before. He said that we would see more advertising, etc. with the confirmation date. I also asked about the shell coverings; they did not have them in stock, but he showed me the area they would likely be. He also said BB mobile guys are not on commission, so any of them would be more than happy to help me without being territorial about it.
One other thing: The Buy Back program is free until the end of the month 2/28, so you don't need to worry about not getting it.
What I'm planning to do: I'm an AT&T customer, off contract, so I'm waiting patiently to see how much the 4G data plan is and how much the overall voice/data package will be. I'll be watching the papers and word on line for the launch date. Then assuming the pricing is $39.99 for the voice portion and $29.99 for the unlimited data portion (rumored to the be same price as the 3G data plan), that would be $69.99/mo and $249 for the phone with a 2 year Verizon contract. I would purchase the Buy Back program (free until the end of the month) and perhaps get the $9.99/mo Black Tie Geek Squad protection program.
The Black Tie program protects the phone from accidental damage (dropping it or spilling), battery replacement, power surge repair, and any "lemons" that may occur outside the 30 day window. You can cancel this program at any time; it's month to month.
Hope that helps.
Bring on the TB! ;-)
