Depends on your device! Search through your device's forum (Android Phones > Model) and there will be lots of methods. Just choose the one with the most good reactions! [emoji2]I want any and all recently tested and proven successful methods of rooting your Androids.
Any advice particular to the Kyocera Hydro Life would be great too

And try to find a way which includes flashing a "custom recovery"

Yes. These ways may be a bit more complex, but if you fail, you can always recover using the custom recovery.
That's why it's called *recover*y
