Root Best Kernel/ROM????

Vmanisme

Android Enthusiast
I am picking up my DINC tomorrow, upgrading from LG Ally so obviously its a big upgrade lol. Anyways, wanted to go ahead and find out what ROM/Kernel people are using, my needs are battery life and fast interactive response, I'm not gonna game too much so dont care about that. Also anything with lots of flashy colors (ROM's) without suffering speed is for me.

Basically:
Speed > Flashy colors
Flash colors > Battery

Battery life is subject on all ROMs if you ask me. I would start with Skyraider, definately some speed improvements and tweaks, plus gets rid of bloatware I ran that for a month, but am now on Myns Warm 2.2, allows for more customization, but I have had worse battery life with Myns, but just like it more, so I deal with it.

Guess you use their stock kernels?

Yes, Skyraider uses the latest stock kernal, but Myns has an overclocked custom kernal by Ziggy 471. It doesn't matter to everyday performance, both are fast, but Quandrant with Skyraider was in 1200-1300s, and 1400-1500s with Myns.

For first rom try RR 2.13 and use Chads latest kernel, nice combo to start with...don't doubt it.

I liked the setup I had of Virtuous with the Hydra Overclocked kernel. Trying out the uncommon sense ROM with stock kernel. I like the mix of vanilla with some HTC widgets. Skyraider's app drawer was too laggy for me.

Every ROM/Kernel combination will have different results on different phones. A ROM/Kernel combo that works stellar on Jane's, Dick's, Harry's and my phone may be horrible on yours. Just like a combo that works well for your Inc may be awful on mine. It's a process of elimination to be honest. I'd say flash away until you find a stable combo that you're happy with. That being said what works GREAT on my Inc is Myn's Warm 2.2 and HeyIt'sLou's #4 Kernel. Super fast and stable and I'm getting over 60 hours between charges (have an 1800 mAh battery fyi) Good luck and enjoy your Incredible

+1 this

If you use an alternative launcher (Launcher Pro, ADW, etc), check out Lou's Senseless Revolution. Same as RR 2.13 but with Sense removed to free up some memory.

I have Warm TwoPointTwo and when I switched from its stock kernel to the Lou's #4 I thought I'd get the excellent battery life they did. I was wrong. I get much better battery life on the stock Warm kernel than I did Lou's (yes I did the necessary wipes). So take what WormDoes said to heart, it really does depend on your device.

How can I tell what kernel works well with what ROM. I have skyraider vanilla (using Launcher pro) and would like battery improvements.

I triple these sentiments. Also using the the new EVO radio found in this thread:

I am using Launcher Pro. I have tried other ROMs and combos but this has been by far the best for me...speedy, smooth, and best battery life of any combination I have come across.

I've been using the lastest Redemptive Revolution and Lou's #4 kernel for a couple weeks now. For a different spin, I flashed Viva! 2.0 Clear Black and Blue theme. Wow, great battery life, performance, and awesome eye candy. I could flash and experiment more but what I have now really works for me.

Turns out my issue with Lou's kernel may have been bad timing. The facebook 1.5 update I JUST found out still has push turned on even after turning everything off. That might have been what killed my battery. Might have to try Lou again once I get this figured out.

I'm using Warm Two point Two RLS 4. With Lou's #6 kernel.

So far my phone is running great with no fc's or issues.

i flashed ultimate droid 2.5 for my DINC a few days ago and i love it!! ive had skyraider, virtuous, and myns warm 2.2. Its snappy and i really like the customizations you can do with it. I wish it used the evo marketplace that myns uses, i like the freshened up look and feel of it.

use cyanogenmod 6.1 its fast and its got awesome tweaks. get it from ROM manager.

I have been using the custom kernel from Virtuous and battery life is awesome, much better than the Hydra overclock

Honestly you need to try several ROMs. There are a lot of really good ones. Heyitslou, Skyraider, CM, ruby, a lot of the AOSP ROMs are all great.

Just remember if you flash kernels if it has sense or is sense based you don't want to use a AOSP kernel.

Happy flashing and don't foreget to nandroid!

Turns out it didn't matter. Tried Lou again but battery life was terrible. Went back to warms stock kernel and all is well again.

How can I tell what kernel works well with what ROM. I have skyraider vanilla (using Launcher pro) and would like battery improvements.

I ran this with Hydra OC/UV kernel for quite a while and had supurb results. I have since gone to OMGB-6 and run Invisiblek's 31 with even better results. I do keep a nandroid of my Skyraider Van/Hydra combo handy though.

Next stop will be OMFGB and whatever Invisblek comes up with next.

I had been running Virtuous 3.2 with its custom kernel #3 and SetCPU to underclock with screen off, battery too hot, or battery <40 %.

I was using the stock Dinc battery (1350 mAmp) and, while battery life was far better than with unrooted stock ROM, I wanted more. I wanted to simply not worry about needing a charger all day.

I have since loaded HeyIt'sLou #4 and deactivated SetCPU, while returning to the Seidio 1750 mAmp battery I already had. While the power drops precipitously in the first 15-30 minutes from near 100% to about 85%, it has been hovering in the 70%'s all day, and I'm already 12 hours off the charger.

I could probably get through the night at this point without charging, but I don't need to, and I think I've found the right pairing of ROM and kernel.

I'm awaiting a 2150 mAmp battery I just ordered. I'm wondering what kind of results I'll get with that combo.

You should try Warm 2.2 RLS 4 with Lous 4. Awesome battery life along with smooooothness

Yeah, Warm 2.2 and Skyraider Sense are both calling to me, but the need to wipe data is a major negative. As a professional, I have a lot of practice-related data aboard, and even with my being OCD about Nandroid and Titanium Backups, I'll lose at least an hour or two rebuilding my data after a wipe.

Maybe some time if I actually take a vacation....
