Root Best option to get root after 3.17.651.5?

dogbyte420

Lurker
I just got the phone and it's really nice except the app associations are, of course, screwed up. It's running stock 3.17.651.5 currently, no-root, s-on.

I was wondering if anyone had some advice for the best way to fix this app ordeal. I've never rooted a phone before so I don't want to jump into it without advice for this particular software version. Apparently, the heartbleed fix has only been out for a month and there aren't many topics about it in the forums. So, I'm not sure if the older ways to root the phone work with this version? O.o

Another alternative that I was thinking of would be to update to 4.3 and sense 5. Would that fix the app association problem? Also, are there many bugs on 4.3 that would make it not worth it? I see a post on these forums about downgrading from 4.3 that gives me a negative vibe about it.

Thanks in advance for the help :)

not sure on app association, but i doubt it....you can thank apple for this.

rooting should be fine, but do not update the phone, if you plan on rooting it.

this still applies:

I'm trying to decide which method to use. Windroid looks the easiest but recently someone on their post said they got errors.
I'm still a little sketched about not seeing 3.17.651.5 being supported. Any advice on which method I should use to get root and s-off?

Thanks for the support guys, you're really doing me a HUGE service here :)

I would follow the guide Ocn posted above. Follow the instruction to unlock your boot loader through HTCdev. Then move on to S-off. The Rooting for dummies thread has everything you need to gain root and S-off.

Read through that and if you get stuck let us know. :)

Hey dogbyte420, I'm in the same boat as you. I just picked up a new EVO 4G LTE yesterday from Sprint (killed my launch day EVO 4G LTE - long story for later). I'm tempted to upgrade to the new HTC One M8 but I really like this phone. Its been a workhorse and done almost everything I've needed. I lost lots of goodies so I'm looking to install Titanium Backup etc., so I can avoid that issue in the future.

So far, I've been able to unlock the boot loader and gain Root with SuperSU on the stock 3.17.651.5 Rom. I'm also looking to gain S-OFF (nothing has worked as of yet). I tried to get S-Off with Rumrunner (through Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit) several times following the "Rooting for Dummies" thread very carefully with no luck. I know Granite1 said the "Rooting for Dummies thread has everything you need to gain root and S-Off" but I'm not so sure that applies now after the 3.17.651.5 OTA.

Anyone's help would be much appreciated!

Still waiting on someone who has a reliable tried and true method to gain S-Off on the 3.17.651.5 OTA update on stock Sprint EVO 4G LTE..... Windroid 1.2 and Rumrunner 0.5.0 have both come up short so far...

EDIT:
I found this post and was finally able to achieve S-Off with the instructions provided by Strat911 (post #803) http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte...ng-dummies-complete-guide-17.html#post6554970
I was getting the same error as he was (post #801) until he figured it out. These instructions are not in the "LTEVO Rooting for Dummies Guide" but probably should be added.

Newbie to the whole custom ROM scene here, and I'm in this exact situation, running 3.17.651.5. I was immensely pleased to come across your reply, since it seemed like it would lay out the path I need to take perfectly. Only problem is I'm a Mac user, and Rumrunner can't run its rum on OS X.

Since my attempts to boot from a Linux live CD have all frozen my computer, I'm starting to think about alternatives. Has anyone successfully achieved S-Off on this phone using Firewater? I only found one thread about it in this entire forum. Is there a reason Rumrunner is to be preferred?

EDIT: So, I went ahead and just tried Firewater anyway. It started chugging, then coughed up "nasty, need a chaser", and then quit. I tried running it again. This time, it started chugging and after about a minute just aborted the adb shell, without the chaser message. I am still S-On.

I found another thread on the XDA developers forum (in which airdog also posted). Though not using a stock ROM to get S-Off, he also found that Rumrunner succeeds where Firewater fails. That's a shame, because it's going to be tough for me to find a machine to run Rumrunner of off.

EDIT 2: I got onto an iMac11,3 that had no issue booting into the Intel x86 XUbuntu 12.04.3 release and running it off of a live CD (my MacBookPro4,1 was the machine throwing fits when booting into Linux). I was then able to use Rumrunner in the manner described above to successfully obtain S-Off (being unlocked and rooted, of course). It is disappointing that I was not able to report success with a Mac method, but so that this isn't a complete waste of space I will report specifically how to get rum ran on a Mac when using a Live CD.

  1. Get the Linux adb and fastboot tools. Open a terminal window and type
    Code:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
This method has the advantage of automatically taking care of your environment PATH for you, so that adb and fastboot can be called from anywhere in bash.
  2. Plug in the EVO 4G LTE in via USB and test the connection with adb devices.
  3. If you haven't already given adb superuser privileges, run adb shell and allow SuperSU to grant it root access.
  4. Reboot the device into the bootloader and test the connection with sudo fastboot devices. For me, fastboot required root to run, and it didn't do anything if the call wasn't preceded by sudo. This cost me a lot of time debugging a non-problem.
  5. Download Rumrunner and follow the instructions on the website. Don't forget to call with sudo.
Hope this helps someone forgo a lot of pain in the future!
