Root Best Rom??

Bewing12

Lurker
I have a Virgin Droid 1 that i have had for 4 months and i keep reading about all of your rooted phones and now im wondering what is the best rom and why?

Also if I decide to do this i will need a little help from you guys.

Also i have world of War on my phone if i do this with a new rom will i have to start over?

As far as your game goes, use Titanium backup to backup the app & data. It SHOULD save your scores. SHOULD.

You're going to get a lot of subjective opinions on ROMs, as they are almost as varied as the people who use them. Some swear by Liquid Frozen Yogurt, while I am hooked on Ultimate Droid 2.5's many customization options. Bugless Beast is stable and fast, without many bells & whistles. CyanogenMod is the grand-daddy of them all, and I would suggest that behind UD.

Your best bet is to try them for yourself, letting each one settle in for a few days. What works great on my Droid may not work well on yours. Test drive them, and tell us which one YOU fall in love with. :)

ok im confused, so i will tell you what i want.
1. a little more speed, the stock one seems to pause from time to time.
2. Wireless teether, for trips so my kids can play on there ipods.
3. keep Froyo that was an ota update.

reading some forums they say i can root and keep the same rom to get the wireless teether. but from what i gather i have to root and then choose a rom that i like.

or do i root and change the kernel for the speed. i get more confused when i read the forums. please set me straight on the current slang.

You can do it all. Wireless or Wired tether, Overclock for speed. The sky is the limit when it comes to the Droid. I will do my best to help you understand the terminology a little better.

Root is a special user account used for system administration. That's the basic definition. You can search the forums or check out Wiki for a more detailed definition. The only thing you really need to understand is that Root allows you to load custom ROMS and use apps that require Superuser permissions such as Titanium Backup.

Overclocking involves changing your smartphones hardware settings to work at a faster speed than the manufacturer's rating. The Droid is underclocked to 550 mhz. It can be safely overclocked to 1 ghz as far as I know. People have overclocked to processor melting speeds like 1.3 ghz. You will need to find the one the works best for the rom that you choose. Some roms have built-in custom kernels which makes overclocking super easy. If you decide to overclock, buy the app Setcpu. It allows you to create profiles that allow you to control your phone's speed.

Rooting is the first step. Loading a custom recovery that will allow you to install custom roms, backup your current rom so you can test other roms without having to reinstall all of your apps and countless other things is step 2. Check the links for the information needed to do both.

I used RSD Lite, but had a few minor problems that went away when I loaded a custom rom. I thought it was easy, however the author of Link 1 and 2 suggests rooting without RSD. I agree.

Also, rooting will, not may, take a bit of time. Relax and enjoy. It really is a fun experience.

You may be tempted to use rooting apps that are on the market. People say they work, other people say they don't. I used Easy Root with no luck. You can take your chances if you please.

As a side note, there are 2 different custom recoveries: SP Recovery and Clockwork Recovery. I have SP Recovery. SPR is very basic. Not many options. Clockwork has a lot of options and works with the ROM Manager app. Clockwork is also a little trickier to install then SPR in my opinion.

Once you get past rooting your Droid, you can backup World at War. Titanium my backup the whole game. I'm also not sure.

The next step is a little more time consuming.

Check out roms. Look at their feature set. Try them out. Here are the some links.

Some people swear by one while others just jump from one to the other at the drop of a hat.

One thing to keep in mind is that certain roms require you to wipe your phone meaning clear all the data. That option is in the recovery mode. However, other roms want you to try to install the rom over your current rom. That may solve your backup dilemma if you chose to go that root (lol).

CyanogenMOD, Ultimate Droid, Simply Stunning and Bugless Beast are the ones I have used. In the end, I'm sticking with Simply Stunning because it was fast even before I overclocked. I love the fact that I can change the colors of the status bar and the stuff in it without rebooting the phone. The newest version of SS has Wired and wireless tether already installed. No need to look for the .apk's.

Hope this information helps.

1. I'll give you my experience. I have heard some people say one ROM is the fastest they've ever used, and it runs like crap on mine. I'd say different Droids will be better on certain ROMs, but generally a stripped down ROM that keeps it basic will probably run the best (I would assume).

2. Wireless tethering app comes included in basically every custom ROM these days. Even so, you can always download it separately after you have chosen a ROM. Because of this, Wireless tether should not be included in your criteria for a good ROM.

3. Not quite sure what you are saying here tbh.

It is true you can root your phone and use Wireless Tether without having to install a custom ROM. This may be the best option for you, if you just want to "test the waters" at first. Make sure you follow directions very carefully on rooting and installing custom ROMs though. However, as you said you are looking for a way to speed up your phone a little bit. To accomplish this I think you are better off installing a custom ROM. And yes what you read is true. You must root first to install a custom ROM.

Basically I'll leave you with this final advice:
You can install WiFi tether and speed up your phone with just rooting (no need to install custom ROM), but I don't suggest it. I suggest you go ahead and install a custom ROM.

Forgive me, but another "which rom thread"? Really?

Seriously in riffdex's post above, his point #1 is the absolute TRUTH.

For me, I usually read the various rom threads and see how many ppl have problems said rom(s) and then pay close attention to how well they're handled (or not). I put that in a large bowl and set aside. Then I grab a couple of cups of looking at the DF rescue squad (and other sites) "please help" threads and read which rom those with the problems are running (or trying to). Afterwards I add a dash of salt and read vigorously. Oh, I meant knead. Then I lay it all out on a cookie sheet, roll it out and see which one rises to the top. Then I'll put that one in the oven for a while and see how it comes out. If it burns quickly, well then . . . .
