Best SMS app?

MLSS

Android Expert
I am looking for a good SMS app for my Rush. I have used Chomp on my old Gingerbread Marquee, but it just didn't vdo it for me.

I would love to hear from some of you about what you prefer and why.
Thanks in advance.

I've tried Handcent, GoSMS, Chomp - I always end up back with the default.

Handcent was too complicated for me. Too many customizations. GoSMS was better, but had too many extra features, and had spammy notifications. I believe Chomp was similar to Handcent - just too much.

The default could use a FEW more customization options , but it works well enough for me.

It might help if you give us an idea of what features you're looking for.

Yes, good post by gingersnapgirl.. especially the part about what you want in an sms app.

I don't have any particular features in mind. The only thing I don't want is one that is spammy or looks like an 8yo designed it lol

Go SMS is really really customisable, like everything can be altered. I like it because my eyes are crap and it lets you change the size, font and colour so even when im drunk, i can read texts.
They do really spam you though wanting you to buy themes. Just blacklist the phone number.
I really dislike the Go devs but i havent found a better sms app

Hmm. if you can blacklist the number and not get the spam, this might be worth another shot for me. I also didn't like all the extra features, all I need is SMS in my SMS app, but the spam was ultimately what killed it for me.

For Go SMS You could go into settings and set it to basic or normal mode. Pro mode is the one with all the bells and whistles. Basic is so basic that I think you can't even change the theme. Normal is somewhere in between. There is even a custom mode where only the features you want is active.

I recently installed Contacts+ as a replacement contact manager/dialer, and was surprised to see how nice & robust their SMS app is. It was good enough for me to uninstall Handcent and go exclusively with Contacts+.

Do you happen to know where to find the basic/normal/pro mode settings? I'm not having any luck finding them.

I just checked and it seemed they removed it. They did a lot of changes in the last update. Apparently they removed Go Chat and a lot of the "Pro" mode settings and turned them into paid add ons or separate apps. Basically what you have now is the Normal mode.

Thanks for the tip re Contacts+. It's a great app and integrates phone, text and quick Facebook access. Really impressed so far.

I only have 2 requirements for a texting app... shouldn't be too much to ask for.

a) Contact-specific notification sounds. Looks like the latest update to the Galaxy S3 finally fixed this... that was a major gain.

b) Group texting. I dont do it often, but I do do it. Unfortunately, the stock app doesn't do it (on the Sprint version of the S3).

I eventually found out that Contacts+ doesn't do it either.

I ended up having to go back to Handcent... only app that does everything. Thats too bad.. I really enjoyed Contacts+.

I just tried group texting in Contacts+ and it worked OK. Although by that I mean I chose several contacts to send to. Did you mean that you wanted to set up groups in advance which you you would then select to send a group text to? If so, I can't see how to do that.

Go SMS does this. I just like how it looks better than Handcent.

Did you receive group replies back? I sent messages to 2 friends, and both returned in separate threads (meaning the 3rd person couldn't see the 2nd person's response).

Maybe its a problem only on the Galaxy S3. I know that the native Sprint 4.1.2 variant doesn't do group messaging properly either. Hopefully to be fixed when 4.2.2 rolls out.

Until then, its Handcent for me.

Verizon messages is actually a pretty decent app. It doesn't have themes, but receiving group messages sends to work better than any of the other apps.

You don't need to be on Verizon to use it.

Go Sms sounds like a good app though I have never tried it I mainly use WhatsApp for interaction with friends :)

I used to use that..but I have forgotten why I stopped. Anyway, I like MySms's app as well as the desktop webapp. I just have Chrome make an application shortcut and use RBTray to minimize to my system tray and it works well for me.

I installed Textra a week or so ago, and so far I'm loving it.
It has a good range of options and is reasonably customiseable. I'd say its worth a shot, I havent had any problems with it and havent had any "spamming" from it either.
