I am currently not rooted. would like a free, easy way to backup all my SMS and contacts so when I install froyo, I am 1) starting fresh and 2) can restore all my sms.

what is the best way for me to do this?

There is a thread in the Tips and Tricks section called something like "backup (almost) everything before RUU or factory reset". That lists a free app to backup SMS.

P.S. I really need to figure out how to add a link to a particular thread.

I had to do a factory reset several weeks ago due to the "low space" warning. I used SMS Backup+ to sync all SMS messages with my gmail account. It assigns a tag ("SMS" by default, but you can change it) to all of them for easy filtering.

You should just get into the market and search for a free backup application... There are plenty good ones for free that can sync up your entire phone, so when you want to reload the data you just download the app and sign in again to get all your content back. Pretty slick.

Which app would backup everything? As I can't find anything.
