best way to copy files to it?

Hi there. I use Linux (fedora 17) on my laptop, and when I plug it in, it sees it has an audio device and gives options to transfer music to/from it.

I miss the old android SD card access. I started using an FTP server instead, which sends the stuff over wifi.. But isn't there an easier (faster) way to do this, over the USB cable?

They seem to have dropped the USB drive support from ICS. Apparently, ICS is more "consumerfied", meaning more supportive of DRM and limiting how the device can be used. There are, of course, some efforts to add block device support back, but until then, over the network might be easiest.

I use Dropbox with either Dropsync (to synchronize folders) or ES File Explorer (for individual files) across multiple devices, but since you're using Linux, you might also find SSHDroid simpler. It turns your SGT into a SFTP server so you can transfer files directly to it (e.g. mount it with sftp://root@address:port) and copy files directly to it from your desktop. This avoids shoving everything upstream to Dropbox, then back down, and should be much faster.
 
Try it---Wifi is really slow. I messed with the usb cable on the gt-p5113 for days with no luck so I moved on to various wifi apps but that was excruciatingly slow. Finally decided that all the effort was for only a few transfers--put the micro sd card in the adapter, popped it in the pc, transferred files and then back in the GTab. Easy peasy...
 
I think their working on an apk file download(bug fix). So instead of mtp.. Mass storage will be accessible... Haven't come across one yet but I'm sure we're not there only ones thinking of this
 
If you are going to be transferring mountains, just remove the microSD and stick it into the computer. Otherwise, both dropbox or FTP server works well.

With the FTP server, you can still transfer mountains, but you better have lots of time..

am I missing something here :confused: When I transfer files between my pc and Galaxy. I hook the charging cable up to my computer and tablet. Wait for them to find each other then I copy and paste the files over? If I am reading things correctly what I am doing is impossible?
 
I just picked up the official Samsung USB Connector from Best Buy. It's an adapter that plugs into the 30-pin connector at the base of the GT2 and converts it to a USB port. You can then plug in a USB drive, and a file explorer automatically opens just like in Windows.

Can't post a link to the item just yet (still a newbie) but go to Best Buy's website and search SAMSUNG USB CONNECTOR. If you go to the store, it's most like underneath the Samsung Galaxy Tab series display.
 
Is it possibly regional issue?

Tab 2 7.0 here comes with USB cables that doubles as charger cable. Plug it in into laptop running Windows, kabooom. Recognized as Media Player, with the ability to transfer files, any files.
 
Aside from my computer not recognizing the tablet on one occasion, simply connecting the charging cable that came with it to my front USB port brought up the typical plug-and-play options. Then it's just a matter of drag-and-drop.
 
I contacted samsung because when I lod my sd card with all my comics and ebooks then put it back in the device the folders dont show up at all. Samsung told me they dont support text file transfers via pc to tablet . Is there a way around this or did i buy this tablet for nothing considering I bought it with the sole purpose of reading my old comic cbr collection. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Finally got around to fooling around with the USB Connector that came with the SE. I plugged in a USB drive loaded with music files. The thing I can't figure out is how to play more than a single song at a time. The two stock players don't seem to find/recognize the drive. File Manager and ES File Explorer can see the files and folders fine.

What am I missing?

/mnt/sdcard is NOT your SD card.

No, I can see the drive, folder and files (with the file managers). It's called USBdriveA or something like that. My problem is getting the music player or media app to get to it/find it/recognize it.

Maybe I should WinAmp and see if it can locate the files.

Edit: the paper that comes with the Connector says, in part: 3) In your mobile tablet, select the multimedia files to share. See the mobile tablet user manual for details.
So do I need to set up a network or sharing session? I looked under Settings last night but didn't see anything that seemed appropriate. Not sure, though.

You should not need a network setup to transfer files (assuming you are transferring through USB connected to your PC). Just open up Windows Explorer (Start -> Computer) and find the drive for your Galaxy Tab. Mine is at the bottom under Portable Devices. Then open a 2nd Windows Explorer and browse to the files you want to transfer and drag and drop to the first window.

If you want to check if the files are on the tablet, just use the file manager app from Samsung and browse for the files. I think you need to be unplugged from the pc.

If the files are there but not showing up in the music player (i.e. Google Play Music, or Samsung's built in music player) on the tablet, I would try to reboot the tablet. If they still don't show up, try going to Settings-> Apps-> All -> (Whichever music app you use) and clear data/cache. This should cause the player to search for media the next time the app starts.

Edit: Oh yeah, I remembered that a couple months ago I was having a problem where all my music files were showing up three times in the lists, and none would play. I fixed it by removing the sdcard and putting it back in. Music player resynced on the next start. Worth a try if nothing else helps.

The music files on the SD card show up and play fine. I'm talking about files on a USB drive (32gb thumbdrive, via the 30pin/USB Connector). The music player doesn't see it. I can move files between SD and USB drive back and forth fine. And if I select/tap on one of the files via My Files it will play the one song. But if I want to play a folder/album/playlist from the music app it doesn't see it.

I wondering if this is a ICS limitation or a Samsung thing to encourage using their Media Hub.
Another thought is that the USB Connector I have isn't intended to do this. I see on Samsung's site a different one that they are selling. This is the one I have:

In the end, it's not that big a deal. I switched from a 8gb to a 32gb card and it should be plenty. I'm just figuring out the capabilities of the USB Connector that came with my tablet.
