Help Best way to hard reset???

Since I got Froyo over OTA, I have had numerous problems and did a factory reset on the phone (through "settings"). Lo and behold, I am still having major problems and need to try resetting again. What is the best way to do it and clear out all the crap that is in there? A forum search doesn't help much at all. I have heard to do a keyboard reset but didn't get the specifics on that. The Sprint store said to go into the phone and type in some numbers but I didn't write that down because I assumed the info would be here. No luck. So what is the best way to get a clean sweep? Clear instructions would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would do it through the menu the way that you did originally.

I'm interested in finding out the other method though!

The other way to reset it is easy if you know you MSL#.

Type ##786# in the dialer and enter you MSL to open the menu.

To find your MSL you can call Sprint and ask for it or DL Connectbot from the Market, Run connectbot, choose to connect to "local" type "getprop" and hit enter. You can scroll up and down by dragging along the right side of the screen until you find the line with the MSL #.

That's how I recently did mine.

The best way to reset is with the hardware keys in order to clear both the Dalvik cache and the carrier programming properly.

He is right, a true hard reset needs the Dalvik Cache reset and the user info.

I think for the EPIC , with phone off, hold the Volume Down key, Press Power.
If that doesnt work add holding down the camera button.
If that doesnt work dont blame me and google it. :)

He is talking about getting into stock recovery and wiping data, cache and dalvik cache. And it is volume down+camera+power, this is of course with the phone turned off.

so what is the impact of a hardware reset? will all data be lost? do we then need to do a full restore of personal data?

The point of the hard reset is to clear everything but the rom/kernel so all parts of it can start fresh and not have any data corruption which can cause alot of the fc problems. Somewhere during the flash process and the restoration of data somethings can corrupted since the phone is not being forced to do a hard reset after the install. And yes your data will be lost, but small price to pay to get your phone to function like its suppose too. Best thing to do is find certain apps to backup what you can to preserve vital info and load your apps fresh from the market instead off the sd if you have any saved on it.

Thanks for the quick response. Follow-up question. After the hard reset (btw I have Sprint as my cell provider) do I have to have sprint reload anything or does this happens once the phone figures out that its using the Sprint Network? Any suggestion on backup apps either for the SD or to the laptop

Thanks

no worries about sprint related stuff. the last installed stock firmware will be there along with all sprint apps, just as if the epic was pulled out of the box and activated. remember that day?

as for backup, if all your contacts are googled, then it will resynched back to the epic after you reentered your google info. for non-google contacts, you can use the export option from contacts to save a copy to SD card, then import it back later. unfortunately, i don't think it will save groups.

if you have purchased apps from the market, those will eventually show up in your list of apps to reinstall. you are on your own with the free apps.

you can backup your SD card to laptop if you want, but the card won't be touched by the hard reset.

as for backing up apps data, some apps have ability to save data to SD card or on their server.

there are apps to backup SMS data, if you care about them. i believe My Backup Pro can backup most everything then restore back.

lots of options, just search.

it won't be fun restoring back, but it's worth it if your epic is acting up.

You will be back to whatever was the last rom flashed so if it was dk27, it will be dk27. If it was di18, it will be di18. Midnight rom then midnight rom etc.. the statement about be like out of the box new is accurate to the point where there is no data or apps except stock ones on the phone. This clears everything, including the bad data or apps that is causing fc's. When ota is done the phone is not made to do a hard reset, which is nice because it restores everything but its bad because during the restoration process data can and will get corrupted which is what is happeneing here. Hope this clears up some of the confusion if not ask away!
