Best way to increase volume?

There's no doubt that the Gnex volume is absolutely pathetic even when using Volume+ (pre-JB). I'm not sure if it's just mine or if others/all are the same but I can't hardly hear my phone ringing when its in my pocket, TV apps are virtually unhearable unless in a very quiet room.

Are there any more solutions out there to improve this terrible volume or do I have to root to gain permissions to increase to an acceptable level?

Only ones I know about require root, like Nexus louder.
