Help Better Email solutions...??

Okay... there's got to be some better email solutions out there.....
I've used K-9 on my phone and it's okay, but it's just not going to cut it on this tab.....
What I'm looking for is essentially my Outlook for Android... anybody? anybody?
I need:

  • The ability to save emails in folders I create.
  • Not have those emails disappear when I download them from the server onto my regular computer...
  • And I really like having a preview/view pane like the standard email does in landscape mode -although to have the preview pane in vertical mode too would be really nice....

I saw in another thread I'd need IMAP to do this... my email accts are pop.. can I just configure them as Imap in my Tab, or is that something I need to change on my email server?

And just for clarification-- I don't have a corporate acct or anything like that-- just my pop email accts from my personal website...

So any suggestions / help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
BOB

Bob,
I think the first thing you need to let us know is why the default Email App does not provide what you need.

Hopefully we can then work around this.

So does the default email do the things I listed? I know about the viewing pane in landscape mode.... But creating folders and saving emails even after my regular email has pulled them off the server?
If I'm missing how that works please enlighten me!

But regarding what my needs are: it sucks when you go to reference am important email, but it's disappeared because you downloaded it from the server with your regular email...

Okay, got you..
It is true the Email App does not show the Folders created, just the Inbox and Trash.
Leaving a copy on your server should still be possible you just need to do it either at your local Outlook on the PC or at the servers mail account.

Personally, I don't use the email app. I much prefer to use the servers online web address, as in my case by logging directly into my yahoo account.
That way what I see on my Tab's screen is identical to that what I get on my PC, which means all folders and all.
Can you not access your online server's web portal, or would you prefer not to do that?

I can log into the web portal- I just prefer not to. I like to have copies of important emails with me... not at google, not at yahoo, nor at my web email server..... on my device! Darn....
But thanks for your help.

One option you could do is to have your emaiul account forwarded to your GMail account.
Quite a few do it this way especially for IMAP accounts.
You then open GMail and read all your mail including that from your normal account.

The best way to achieve a closed circiut, i.e. your mails synced wirelessly between your Outlook, laptop, mobile device or any other mobile device and PC is via IMAP mail. I have tried everything to achieve the ultimate MS Exchange "like" solution without the expense. My research and subsequent trials led me to choose Gmail. The way to do it is as follows:

1. Setup a Gmail account - free
2. Set your account to run IMAP not POP
3. Get Gmail to fetch mail from your existing POP3 account - when this gets done at set intervals your Gmail account will disperse it automatically to all your clients via IMAP
4. Setup Outlook as follows:
Email address: your full Gmail username@gmail.com or userneame@gmail.xx.xx
Account Type: IMAP
Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com
User Name: username@gmail.com
Password: your Gmail password
-> goto More Settings -> "Outgoing Server" tab and tick "My Server (SMTP) requires authentication -> click the radio button "use same settings as my incoming mail server"
-> goto "Advanced" tab -> Incoming Mail Server (IMAP) - enter 993 and choose SSL encryption -> Outgoing Server (SMTP) - enter 587 and choose TLS encryption
-> finally goto "Sent" and choose "do not save copy of sent items" otherwise you'll end up with duplicates in your sent folder - Outlook setup is done.
Finally, on your mobile device simply setup your Gmail account. For this all you need is your full username@gmail.com and password. From know on all your emails will be in sync (unread, read, sent, drafts, deleted, etc.) without any additional manual input on your part. All this will work with your HTC/Gmail mail apps on your mobile device, no need for any third-party apps.
A final thought, if you really want to close the whole loop and incorporate the syncing of your Outlook calendar, contacts and notes then I can recommend a little desktop software called gsyncit, which is really cheap at some $15 (one-off cost) and works perfectly. Best of British.

I'm glad you came forward with this, as it adds strength to what I said in the previous post above, only you said it with further explanations ~ which I was about to give once Bob had answered my reply.
Basically, you saved me going through the procedure. :)

hi there. I'm a new user to Android and was puzzled as to why my work emails kept disappearing. Does this mean I only can use gmail to push forward my work emails, and retain a copy on my device?

Thanks.

Did you read heat57's explanation for Bob above.... It was the method I was about to post as well.
Try it.

Hello bansheeFC, it doesn't really matter which mail service provider you use - there are several ou there - but it has to be IMAP! this is the only traditional mail protocol that will "push" mail to your account! Notice that I am referring to "account" and not phone, as the key is your account and not the device you are accessing it with. In simple terms this means that when you "download" mail to your handset it will not remove it from your account but will be on the server and available to you anywhere, i.e. your laptop, PC and so on. Only when you choose to delete your mail from any one of your devices will it be deleted from the server. The sync happens automatically.

The reason I suggested Google is that with their service you not only get to sync mail but also your calendar events, tasks, notes and contacts and, best of all, you can find desktop software to handle a seemless sync with Outlook or other software of similar nature. Hope this helps.:D
