Big List of Android Game Reviews [UPDATED DAILY]

all are good. And looking for some paid games.
I actually try my best to say away from paid games. Not because they aren't great (some of the very best games are paid!) but just because I want to make sure that everyone will be able to play the games I cover - no matter your disposable income :)

What's your favorite premium games, though?

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Iron Blade
Alright, so the graphics and combat animations in Iron Blade are simply amazing - probably some of the best I've seen in any mobile game. The combat is just brutal. Additionally, the game is fast-paced and has a simple upgrading system - in a good way.

However, the game IS filled with in-app purchases, and overall it feels like a bit of a bare-bone RPG, in that you don't actually control your characters movements - you simple tab the screen to either attack or block. Also, the game requires you to be online at all times, and takes up 2 GB of storage when installed.

Final verdict is that as much as I'd like to hate on this game, the game's combat actually IS a lot of fun, and I'll recommend the game if you're looking for a AAA game to play every once in a while - but just don't start spending money on the game, as it'll turn into a huge money sink.

Ah but mobile games cost peanuts don't they? I mean compared with console games which are very expensive.
I'd be interested to know what are your personal top 5 or 10 games? Either paid or free.

This really is a graphically beautiful game. Lot of work gone into it.
Love the killing moves, reminds me of Assassin's Creed.

Sure, they do cost peanuts in comparison, but many under the age of 18 might not be able to buy mobile games at all, and thus have to rely on free to play games. And in addition, mobile gaming is huge in many emerging countries too, where many families don't have computers nor consoles. So all in all, I just figured I'd stick with free to play games and thus be sure that everyone could at least play the games. No matter what :)

As for my top 5 games. It's a tough question, as I've never really thought about an actual top 5. Right now, I really enjoy playing "Last Day on Earth: Survival", and it'd probably have to be my all-time favorite survival game (a genre I typically don't particularly enjoy). Apart from that, I find the following games really enjoyable: Guns of Mercy, Soul Knight, Strike of Kings, C.A.T.S, and Art of Conquest.
It's not like I play the games mentioned above on a weekly basis, but they have each given me great gameplay experiences for some time :)

What about yourself? Do you have a top 5? Doesn't have to be mobile games.

Yeah, it's amazing how much time they must have put into the combat in general.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Last Day on Earth: Survival
The game is a hardcore multiplayer survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world with crafting, bunker vaults to raid, PVP and lots more.

Travelling between in-game areas takes time, and the game monetizes by employing an energy system allowing you to speed up the travelling time, and if you run out of energy, you can buy more through in-app purchases. Energy systems always suck, but I typically play for 10-20 minutes then put down my phone and come back to it a few hours later. In this way, I don't ever feel the need to replenish my energy faster than the normal energy recharging time.

Overall, the game looks great and plays super smoothly. It's the first survival game on mobile I feel is worth taking notice of, honestly, and I've not been able to put it down for over a week now.

Well as you've asked :) I can say that these are my top 5:-

1. Splinter Cell. As a stealth fan I absolutely loved this franchise. Played nearly all the games from start to finish. Ubisoft kind of ruined it though.
2. Portal. The most innovative game of the past few years. Wish Valve would make another one.
3. Rainbow Six. Tactical shooter, with planning phase. Loved it.
4. Galaxians. Arcade classic. Much of my youth spent playing this game.
5. Mario Karts (SNES version). I can't tell you how much fun I had playing this with my housemates at the time.

Mario Karts - ah yes, I absolutely love that game too! A friend of mine loved the first Splinter Cell games too :)

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: SumiKen : Ink Blade Samurai
A neat indie Samurai-themed endless runner with a very distinct (and beautiful) "ink" art-style!

The game features 150 missions and 7 playable characters with unique abilities, each of which can be unlocked by either playing the game or buying them through an in-app purchases. In addition, the game monetizes through incentivized ads (watch an ad to revive), and occasionally throws a skippable video ad at you. I'd like to see these forced ads to disappear, but to be fair, I only saw 1 ad after playing for around 30 minutes.

Overall, the game was a lot of fun to play, and will easily keep you entertained for a few hours.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Flipping Legend
Looking for an endless runner with several unique characters, RPG-like skill progression, and sweet pixel art played on a chess-like flooring where you have to flip diagonally to kill enemies and collect gold and chests (that was oddly specific, huh :p)? That's exactly what Flipping Legend has in store!

The game is feels great to play, is very responsive and overall got me hooked right from the start with its difficult gameplay. Most everything in Flipping Legend is strictly "play to unlock", with the exception being that you can buy chests for $3 for 40 chests, or remove all ads and receive a free chest every so often for $5. No $xxx in-app purchases here.

An easy recommendation if you're looking for a casual runner with some extra depth.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Castle Battles
Castle Battles is a RTS game (like Settlers) with a very iconic and unique art style, "optimized" for mobile that so each level only takes 5-10 minutes.

There are two objectives; control iron ores and gold mines to build new castles and troops respectively. Controls work great for mobile, and the voiced conversations in the storyline are genuinely fun. Each of the 40 levels have 4 difficulty modes too, so there should be enough to dive into for everyone.

If you are new to or don't typically play strategy games, this is a great entry into the genre. First campaign is free, the rest 3 cost $4.99.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Rucoy Online
Rucoy Online is a grindy pixel-art MMORPG with both PVP and boss battles, which reminds me a bit of Runescape back in the day (no woodcutting, mining etc., though). The game is rather hardcore too, with no worldmap, no tutorial in the beginning etc.

I enjoyed the fact that you at any time can switch between playing as a Knight, Archer or Mage, and that each class even had to be trained up individually. Also, the game is light on the battery and loads quickly, making it suitable for most phones. The monetization focuses mostly on cosmetics, and there are no obtrusive ads (a banner-ad is shown at the bottom of the screen in menus).

The biggest drawback of Rucoy Online is its issues with botting, and for better or worse; the game is still actively being developed, which means many features have not been added yet. But if you enjoy grindy MMOs (like I do), I'd still recommend checking out the game for yourself.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Winions: Mana Champions
Nexon is just pumping out mobile games these days, with base defending deck builder, Winions, being the latest (soft-launched in the Philippines, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland). With a PVP and campaign mode, the game has you building a base in best TD-style, a defense deck used by your AI to protect your base when attacked by other players, and an offensive deck used for the campaign and PVP.

Monetization is alright, with no ads and plenty of premium currency rewarded throughout the campaign, which can be used to unlock chests gained through PVP faster.

Although it might disappear in a sea of somewhat similar games, it's an interesting take on the side-scrolling base defender genre that got popular in the Flash browser game days.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: PigBang
Online Arena Shooter PigBang is a fun "Unreleased" MOBA meets Shooter meets TD (talk about a mixed bag).

Controls are mobile optimized (auto aiming), the match-making is quick and allows you to team up with friends,, but moving through the menus is a bit clunky. You can craft weapons (based on rng), choose from a multitude of interesting skills to take into battle, and deploy AI-controlled helpers or even towers while playing.

Monetization is through incentivized ads and in-app purchases (up to $100), which allow you to open chests faster (Clash Royale style), or even buy melee weapons.

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Super Cat Bros
There's no lack of level-based side-scrolling platformer games for mobile, but few as optimized for touchscreens as Super Cat Bros. Simply tap and hold either side to run in that direction, and double tab to run faster - jumping happens automatically.

In terms of the level design and gameplay mechanics, the game seems to draw inspiration from Nintendo (which is rarely a bad thing), and there's lots of cats with unique abilities, as well as pets to unlock. However, the game sadly monetizes through non-incentivized ads that pop-up every so often between levels, which becomes kind of frustrating.

Haven't updated you fine folk in a while, but I've been grinding away, producing a new "First Impressions" video each day every week.

As the videos start to pile up, people have been saying they wish there was an easier way to browse the videos based on categories. So therefore, I've started working on a website that can hopefully help with this. It'll be sort of a quirky but hopefully useful and fun "recommendation-engine" for mobile games.
My friend is helping build the website, but if you're interested in an early access invite, just shoot me a private message :)

Anyway, one of my favorite games from these past few weeks has got to be Snipers vs Thieves!

Good to see you back NT. I've missed your great game reviews.
Thanks, mate. I got super busy for a while, and seeing as only a few seemed interested in the posts here, I had to cut back a bit. Hoping to get back on a more normal posting-schedule here, though :)

I'd definitely check it out if I had a VR headset :)

Today's Commentary / Recommendation: Ankora
Crafting, survival (hunger, thirst etc.), and exploration; yep. But zombies? Nope!

Ankora is an artistically beautiful and unique survival adventure game that monetizes rather lightly, with only a few in-game purchases and incentivized ads.

Both in terms of graphics and gameplay, it is definitely one of the most unique survival games I've played on mobile.
