Root big setcpu problem for me

My battery gets a little warm, but my processor doesn't. Even when it was charging while at 800 Mhz, the processor did not get hot enough for me to notice it. Every morning I take the phone off charge on my way out of the bedroom. I sit down and read the forums while having my morning cup of tea. I do pay attention to the chip temp, but I never even look at the battery temp. My chip is normally at 65-72 degrees in the morning and I don't remember it being any higher while charging at 800.

Also, I think I would have noticed if the chip was abnormally high because we, the Bugless Beast 7.7, 7.8 and 7.9 users, were discussing this problem ad infi-nauseum every waking hour.

Get some real data and let us know what it is.

Hell I'll go do it right now. I'm going raise my charging profile to 800 and go put the droid on charge. I'll report back soon.

whatever man. all i know is it didn't work like it should. it was broken. i don't like things that are broken, why would anybody be ok with it.

for me when its stuck at 800 and im browsing while charging for battery it goes up to 44c and would still go up if i kept browsing..yes not exactly problematic for battery temp but none the less it should work and i shouldnt have a problem using 600 when charging

Well then install a new rom or kernel right now. I agree it's broken, I'm just saying it isn't going to hurt your phone.

First data point:

My battery was at 80% and didn't think that would put much of a heat load. So i took it out and put a new battery that has never been charged. Battery Life showed it at 5%. Right before I pulled the battery the cpu was at 86F. A very short period of charging (30-45 seconds) took it to 89. It was still at 89 a couple of minutes later. I'll check it again in 10-15 minutes. I love DATA. Though I am pretty good at guessing. :D Are we having fun yet!!

OMG!! i have a fully working kernel on my phone right now. i am using AdamZ Smoked Glass v4.5 rom. his rom and kernel work as it should. the OP is the one with the problem, not me. i had the problem a couple of weeks ago, i only had Taz's kernel on my phone for 1 day. it also killed my battery way faster than it should have. i was down to 40% after 8 hours of the phone sitting just idle in my pocket. i was fine with the charging profile not working for one night, but then when i looked at my phone after an 8 hour shift at work to see it was down to 40% that's when i decided to swap kernels. usually i'll still be at 80% after a full day of work. so it was obvious that something wasn't right.

It's been about 20 minutes since I started charging the phone with a 5% battery and overclocked to a steady 800 Mhz and the droid was at 82 degrees. I then started aggressively surfing the web - loading pages one after the other. I didn't even take time to read any of them. I just kept loading page after page. My droid's chip got up to 105 and then stabilized at between 102 and 105.

At least there's some data.

congratulations!!!!

how about this, start wifi tethering aggressively with it charging at 800mhz. do that for about an hour and tell me how hot it gets.

Even when i set 600 as max overall it goes to 8 when i plug charger in then i
uninstall setcpu and before i do i make sure its at 6 and test with linepack to
see those results i uninstall setcpu then plug in charger and results in
linepack are 8 equivlant not 6

and if you want data take a look at this while charging with it at 800 and just browsing through the market not downloading
procesessor a little high for just that dont you think..even battery considering just doing that

Yep, that's pretty high for what's going on at the time. I mean it's not too high overall considering the upper limit of this chip (70C), but it is too high for that small load (seems to me). But I know there are people seeing temps higher than that regularly during heavy use.

Are you going to update.zip one of the kernels that do not interfere with Setcpu? I mean this is a well documented problem with certain kernels.

im trying to figure out some stuff first about the other roms since i dont know much about doing this stuff on my own without the app doing it for me

I didn't go back and read all this thread, but what rom are you running?

The directions to install another kernel over a rom is very, very simple. I'd be glad to provide those instructions and a website with some proven kernels of various speed settings. In fact, one of the good things about most of these kernels is that they have multiple speed settings from 250 up to 1.25 Ghz. Anyway, good luck.

well right now im at sholes 2.0.5 cause thats the last working one for me but the problem roms that i have tried 2.0.6 and the new droidmod 1.0 rom

my problem right now is im trying to install android sdk from this guide and i think im doing something wrong cause the directory they say should be there isnt there

Good luck with that. I never used SDK. I did download it, but I do everything from my phone with a Terminal Emulator.

i can use the emulator as a total replacement for sdk like anything that calls for adb i can use emulator?

As far I can tell yes. I rooted my phone and have done more than a dozen rom changes, kernel changes, flashed images, chmod 755 files, etc., etc. I just know that I've never used my computer. I have use Terminal Emulator instead. Are there things that can be done from the computer that can't on the phone? If there is, I've never needed it. I love TE.:)

The only thing I use the computer for is to download the files (they are fairly big 72-82 megs). I then mount the phone to the computer and copy the file over and then us SpRecovery from there. I use TE to chmod busybox (this comes up fairly often for me) and I've used it to flash stuff.

liek can this be done from the terminal

AllDroid - View topic - Custom Kernel (Boot.img) 2.6.32 Updates *02/17*

cause u look at step 5 and it says u need pc

1.) Make a Nandroid Backup!!!
2.) Extract the two files and copy them to the root of your SD Card (your preferred method is fine...)
3.) Reboot into Recovery Mode
4.) Using the "Mounting Options" in SPRecovery... mount your "system" and "sdcard"
5.) From your Command Prompt.. Change to your SDK Tools directory... (computer IS necessary!)

That's because he choose to only provide a .img file for that kernel. And doing a flash of the kernel CAN only be done from the computer. But most devs provide the files in either, or both, .zip and nandroid files. Either of these can be done totally from the phone.

Go to this page: AllDroid - View topic - [ROM 2.0.1] Bugless Beast V1.1 (2/22/10) STABLE

And you will find what's basically the same kernels in update.zip versions. Follow the instructions on that same page for installation and the only thing you will need your computer for is to put the file on your phone. However, you could even do the the whole thing from the phone. Just navigate to that page on your phone's browser and download the kernel file (I use the Chevys1.25 and it is flawless). then use Astro or a comparable file manager and move the file from your Download folder and put it on the root of the SDcard.

Go to Setcpu and unselect Start on Reboot.

Then boot into SpRecovery and follow these instructions:

Update.zip Installation Info & Instructions (No Data Loss):
-You can upgrade from any rooted ROM that is 2.0.1
-Be sure to have signed into your Google account before installing
-Update (if available) all of your apps in the market before installing
-Download update.zip
-Place update.zip on the root of sdcard
-Reboot into recovery
-Select - Install
-Select - Allow update.zip installation
-Select - Install /sdcard/update.zip (deprecated)
-After installation is complete navigate up to Reboot
-Enjoy!

And you will be on the new rom. Go to setcpu and select the speed you want to run at and set your profiles.

You can load a kernel from SpRecovery via either update.zip method or nandroid method - no adb required.

Kernels dont come as update.zip's, roms do though. i haven't seen a kernel as an update.zip yet. i had no luck trying to do it with nandroid, that could have been my mistake though.

All of Pete's kernels are update.zip files. I did forget to include in the instructions that after you download the .zip files you need to rename them to update.zip. For example: if you download the chevykernel125update.zip. You will rename it to update.zip. Then move it to root of sdcard.

Sorry if my post above came across a curt. I'm just tired. The truth is that I think Pete may be the only dev that provides .zip kernels. Your statement is almost 100% correct. And if you haven't been using pete's roms, you surely wouldn't know he provides .zip kernels.

Some times I get a too focused and come across like a jerk. :o
