Help Bionic Data Drops

I've seen a lot of threads on multiple forum sites about the Bionic dropping data connections. I was wondering how? Do you guys have something special installed, or rooted, custom ROM? Because mine has never dropped connection and I am on 5.9.893 firmware.

just wondering, so maybe we can see why there are such data drops and help each other out :)

There was an article that came out a few weeks ago that explained the issue pretty well. This may not be the original author, but this is the one that I saved: This Is Why Your Verizon Galaxy Nexus (Or Other 4G LTE VZW Phone) Is Losing Its Data Connection

Key quote:

...This means there are now millions of devices connecting to Verizon's 3G network using an authentication scheme Verizon hasn't previously utilized on that network, and (major) hiccups are occurring as a result.

The "hiccups" are authentication failures - the new scheme is extremely particular about failed attempts to authenticate a device. Your device authenticates regularly, "checking in" with the network to ensure you're still supposed to be connected. When your device fails to authenticate on the network (for any reason - and there are a gamut of possibilities), Verizon will kick you off the data side (not voice, though), either 3G or 4G. At this point, you notice you no longer have a data connection, and throw your phone at the nearest wall.

The severity of the problem can depend on your device. Some devices are more likely to re-attempt authentication immediately, and ten or fifteen seconds later, you're good to go. Some won't - and have to be forced to re-authenticate by switching in and out of airplane mode. Some won't even respond to that, and have to be powered on and off. Our speculation in regards to the varying severity is that it more than likely depends on how aggressive the phone's battery conservation software is. If a device loses connection, it may think it's in a "fringe" coverage zone and stop attempting to reconnect to the network to avoid wasting battery. It could also be that the device's software is just poorly written to deal with such regular failed attempts to get network authentication.

We all know that Motorola and Verizon are actively testing software updates to the Bionic that I am sure that they intend to solve this problem for Bionic users.

I owned a Bionic in October and was hit with several random data drops on 3G (as a matter of fact, when first activated, the phone never received a data signal - I had to go back - after being told by the Verizon tech that it takes up to 30 minutes for a Bionic to get a data connection when first activated - to have him get the phone activated.) I decided that stable data was far more important to me than LTE broadband speeds - it remains so, by the way - so I exchanged the Bionic for another device. However, I remain hopeful that Motorola and Verizon will make this a problem of the past in a very short while.

There was ONE other report here like yours. He (and his wife) are on 4G always. Is that the case with you?

I am 3G only and go through periods of data drops. It has been very stable the last couple of weeks.

People who go from 3G areas to 4G areas are annoyed by the problem a lot.

The leaked 5.9.901 seems to have corrected almost all of the remaining problems. There is apparently an upgrade to that version going to the testers soon as 5.9.902.

I switch between the two, depending on if I need the speed or not. But even switching between 3G and 4G I haven't experienced any drops, not even my Bionic taking a while to change from 4G to 3G.

How long is "a while"?

The article doogald quoted pretty well sums up the problem.

Must be one of the lucky few to not have ANY data drops.

I started from having drops every now and then to about 1 or 2 every hour. Sometimes more.

I am now awaiting my 3rd Bionic from VZW with my second new SIM card to see if my issue decides to miraculously disappear.

And just FYI. I have absolutely nothing installed on this Bionic. I did a factory reset and left it 100% stock.

I've also never really have had any problems with data drops, I've had problems here and there with switching from 4g to 3g. Sometimes I'll have to put in airplane mode to get it to switch to 3g. Going from 3g to 4g is always a breeze though.

I am also on 5.5.893 with the original SIM card.

I was very hopeful after getting the new SIM that everything would correct itself. I actually went the rest of that evening without any drops and most of the next day. Then wham!

Once the drops started they got worse and worse. I called VZW level 2 yesterday around 11:15am and the tech reset my info in the system so the SIM had to register again and he gave me his cell number so I could contact him when and if I had another drop.

I sent him a text at 11:30am when it dropped again. He is sending me another Bionic and SIM card.

Maybe it's bad luck to post in this thread but I've had my Bionic since Wednesday of this week and I've been abusing the privelage of unlimited 4G as much as possible and haven't had any issues. The certified preowned came out of the box with 893. A few days later I decided to root and ROM with Kin3tx and now I've switched to Eclipse v2.0. No real problems during any of this. Late last night I clicked on a download in the market and it never initiated and it seemed like my data hung up for a brief minute but all I did was toggle 4G on and off and then was able to keep on downloading. I'm not sure if this qualifies as what people experiences as a data drop. I've yet to experience anything like the 4G icon disappearing from the screen and not coming back for minutes on end. All is well so far. I thought for sure I'd be having problems and having to consider flashing 901 to see if I got any improvements but I see no reason to do any of that so far.

Well, I was able to correct my data drops 100%

After I updated my data drops have gone to ZERO.

BTW.... I updated to a RAZR.

I actually liked the feel of the Bionic over the RAZR. The RAZR is really too small for my meat hooks.

So I ended up trading the wife the RAZR for her T-Bolt.

Now neither of us have data drops.

VZ sent me a Boinic to try instead of the Revo. The Revo also has this problem but there doesn't seem to be anyone fixing it. VZ would never admit to this problem being in the registration system. I even went so far as to show them a local initiated hop test that worked through their system every time, just could not obtain large amount of data, such as a web page.

I used the Boinc for one day before new firmware. I have not observed this problem, and yes I was looking for it. There was only one way to fix it for the Revo and that was a full user account reset at VZ (I had this done 5 times). Four days of use and no issues yet.

If it is a systematic problem then the issue could be in the VZ application. Do other providers have this issue? Perhaps this is why I could not get them to agree they had a systematic problem. They are really good in phone support but I have yet to hear back from them on any trouble ticket. Perhaps just a quirk in the way they run their business, in all case I keep receiving new phones (which is nice). They did finally admit that they have almost no way to fix their network, their job is to help folks to use cell phones.

Here is a terrible irony ...

The day after you dumped the Bionic 5.9.902 went into soak test. Two days later it went to everyone. It seems to be the solution to the problem that was plaguing you.

Thom: I hope you are right.
I just needed to jump in and out of airplane mode to get the 3G tower back. It did connect quickly, but I don't see why I needed to cycle airplane mode for the Bionic/VZ tower to find each other.

Does anybody know, is this a VZ only problem or do other provides have this problem too?

Couple of questions ...

How many times did you hit this? I had it three times in the four hours after installing 5.9.902, did a Volume Up/Volume Down/Power and it hasn't happened again in two weeks. (After installing the 5.9.902 update I just ran without re-booting.)

If you do nothing ... how long does it take to switch itself?

I think there are "hiccups" on the towers that result in short outages. I can't prove it of course.
