Bird Watchers

I wouldn't mind that in my yard.

You may eventually get one or more. They seem to be spreading throughout Putnam County. The guys seem to go on sabbatical for 3 or 4 months each year. (Looking for mates??) I have a corner lot so there is New York City watershed property on two sides of my property. This means I get a lot of critters stopping by for visits. I had a Ring-neck Pheasant
stop by for some seed a couple of years ago. The strangest visit was this past summer. When I looked out my front door one morning, there was a fawn perched on the door mat. Around noon I called the local police since he was still there. The dispatcher told me to keep people away for at least 24 hours and call back next day if he was still there. Next morning he was still there. I decided to wait until 10 or so before calling the police again. An hour os so later I looked out the kitchen window and saw a doe with a fawn trimming some bushes. Yes, it was the fawn from the porch. Apparently it is common for deer to abandon fawns for extended periods of time. Very strange behavior.

I'll stick to seeing the wild turkeys strut through the yard like they own the place rather then worry about fawns thank you.

Me neither, although I think the dogs would enjoy it more.

I don't know about that lunatic59. The guys have nice 1/2 inch long spurs on the back of their legs for defense.

There was a magnificent Kestrel in my birch tree on Saturday, but the porch roof was blocking my vantage point and when I grabbed my camera and moved to the side of the house, I must have spooked him (her?) because it took off across the street.

The birch tree is a triple-trunked river birch that overlooks one of my feeders and I think the Kestrel was eyeing up some of the other birds as a mid-day snack.

Does the Audubon Birds of North America app identify bird calls? I recorded an extremely weird one that only happens at night in autumn in Boston MA, I think. But I guess it could be an insect?
Can I post short audio files here?

Hmmm, I'm sure they have birdsong clips somewhere. When I was in grade school we had a biology teacher that taught a course on birds and we had to learn to identify the local common birds by markings, description and call.

Sure, you can post an audio file, but depending on format not everyone may be able to listen.

No, it won't ID them from a recording but it does have sound files so you can hear what that bird sounds like. I also use and like allaboutbirds.org

edit: Oh and, the Audubon app is happy to send about 300 emails a day asking for money so set up a filter right away! I paid for it a long while ago (Green Mountain) then it went to Audubon and is now free so lots of spammy email. ugh The app itself is still good though.

Forget about it. Probably a cricket the more I listen to it. Four different apps didn't give me a link to upload and share audio files on forums. I did manage to convert from aac to mp3 though so that's a plus.

You, too?

I gave them a spam address on Yahoo. I JHD it from the spam box.
I think Cornell birds might have some sounds, too. That's where the Xmas bird count goes.

Yup, they go right to my junk stupid Yahoo account as well. I am not a fan of Yahoo so am happy to use them for crap only stuff. Like Audubon.

You do know that Green Mountain also sells coffee and owns the Keurig cups.
Who do you think was responsible for wanting DRM on those cups once they got their hands on Green Mountain?

Gah. There were reports up until Friday of a Ross's goose in the area. They shouldn't be here but I couldn't get away to go see it 'til today. Just got back and no friggin' bird to be found. Grrr. Stupid birds.

I just looked out at the feeders to see a Sharpie sitting on them! He was waiting for breakfast. I watched him for a second then reached for the camera but he flew off to the tree. He's always around and on the hunt but that was a seriously cool first.
