It bothers me for a number of reasons:
1) They are self-segregating themselves which means that they are racist and only want to recognize their own people and be near their own people.
2) There is an award show where all people are recognized.
3) They are saying that the award show where everyone is recognized means nothing to them.
4) If white people were to do this we would automatically be seen as racist.
5) The world sees nothing wrong with this.
Consider BET, the most "racist" show there is, to loosely use your definition and the sentiment of the gathered group. By the way, I tend to agree with your post.
Do you know why BET was formed? Largely because black performers and others had no venue at the time. It was for blacks because blacks were excluded. Ironically, BET is perhaps not racist. It came to be because of racism that existed at the time that prevented blacks from getting their due.
The plight of blacks in the entertainment industry is very sad. Almost every musician owes a debt to black performers because we too so much from them and there are countless black musicians--living and long dead--with extraordinary talent.
I thank black slaves for giving us the banjo. I thank Dizzie, Ella, Billie, Joplin, Bird, and countless others; most music has roots in the music of that time. We lost much because of how truly bastard like some whites took advantage of black musicians. We should be ashamed.
If there were a WET, no broadcaster would provide bandwidth and they would be viewed as racist because if anyone decides to create The WET, it would be because of racism, not because of any legitimate entertainment value.
That said, I can imagine Comedy Central bringing us a comedy about a White Entertainment Network. It would be funny (if the writers are funny) and I would guess it would use every racial stereotype out there. The goal would be comedy, not hatred for black folk.
If BET produced it, I would likely watch.
