I tried My Phone Explorer and Companionlink and found both of them to be counterintuitive and just plain difficult. I like Google Calendar Sync (again - I keep nothing in my calendar that I would particularly mind anyone else knowing), and as for contacts - when I enter a new contact in Outlook, I make it a practice to email myself the vcard to my Gmail account so I can pull it into the phone. Same practice in reverse for new contacts I enter into the phone. As for tasks, I haven't yet found a good solution.
While that works for a one-way sync, that seems kludgy to me. How do you make sure that when you edit a contact on your phone that it updates your Outlook?

I don't find Companionlink counterintutive at all. You just install it on the PC and then from that point on everything sync's up automatically both ways. When I add or edit a contact or event either on my phone, google or my PC it updates all my devices. No action on my part is needed to keep everything in sync. Just install it, forget it and everything is synced.

I don't have any issues with syncing my Outlook with my Note 2. I use it primarily for my work email however I also use the calendar as well (not so much the notes or contacts). I setup my email address the same way as all my others and checked the things I wanted it to sync and voila. What specific issues are you having with the setup/syncing of yours? I don't sync my Outlook with my laptop so I can't help you there unfortunately.
