Blame Google for the slow 2.1 update

I cannot imagine that any company owes us anything that is not expressly stated in a contract. If that upgrades are in our sprint contract then the battle is to be fought with Sprint not HTC or google. Sprint in turn has to fight with google and HTC. Software, just because it is easily upgradeable, is not a once in a lifetime purchase. Who gives a flying shit anyway. The Fresh or Modaco or some other ROM will be better than what any company gives us. With what phone has this not been true? The carriers always, always put bullshit on the phone. HTC even. The ROM's work within the Sprint network in all respects and you get the full experience that was intended when they made the phone. If google who owns and makes this software for the most part has the right to keep it their own until it is perfected. Or else they would never get out what they wanted and the OS would be fragmented out into an infinite number of confusing versions. It is close to that now but at least there is some semblance of control. Let's just take all the control away from Google and let them go out of business and then what? All I am saying is being so damn obsessed with what's next takes away from the beauty of what you have now and what you will get next. I am not checking with sprint for my updates. I know they are going to be late and bloated. I know that we will have more than what Sprint will offer us before they will. Sense is not the end all be all of phone interfaces either. If it means an extra month to release a ROM with just Android 2.1 then as long as it works fully on the network good. Maybe people just need those kinds of incremental improvements more frequently.

Sometimes people just don't get it. Thanks for the contractual breakdown, I love it. But to the point in simpler terms... By the presented you would imply that once purchasing a product that you are entitled to any better version post purchase. Like if the vehicle you bought had somehow become more efficient the following model you would be entitled to the same engine/efficiency upgrades??? A LCD TV got better resolution through some software or driver upgrades that you would again be entitled to the same. By your argument then too Microsoft would owe you the newer version of their software when produced because you felt that knowing an update would come making the OS better that somehow this newer version belonged to you at no cost... etc., etc.

See, you should no to be looking at this piece of equipment in any different way, than any other electronic purchase.

That said, being a tortured soul of past phone ownerships with absolutely NO support, no upgrades, updates or whatever... I have to say I am pleasantly relieved to know that the Equipment manufacturer and OS developer has COMMITTED to doing something different and breaking the mold. That they WILL upgrade and make it available on existing equipment... at the cost of potential future upgrade purchases and profits(see Apple).

Ok... It's just my opinion, but I think a more realistic and patient one than some of the hysterical, gotta have it NOW, why can't I have it NOW, they owe it to me NOW - opinions out there.

I've been following this thread quietly, but just had to compliment this post! Excellent insight and very well said. Thanks! repped

I am sorry and I am probably going to come off like an asshole to you but what did Sprint sign for you mister lawyer pants?

It's me that's being the asshole, don't worry. I don't have anything - I was just wondering why anyone would make the assumption.

Everyone is allowed to be an ass on forums, it is encouraged. But we are all by virtue of owning a sprint hero, sprint customers. So we are all on the same playing field for the most part on that front. We should move forward from this discussion to where we can put our energy to development on our own since it seems that the general consensus is that sprint, htc and google cannot be counted on to feed our insatiable needs for new now.

Maybe we should be ok with Flipz and others to actually charge for their ROM's. OF course those will be pirated immediately so donations from responsible people who take benefit from their work is really the best bet. It is sad that non-company developers are better and faster than the actual creators of this shit. Google is not a part of that group because they are developing the crap out of Android it's just the phone makers and carriers who want to put their stamp on it and profit.

I am so over waiting for 2.1. It supports some features that I can't wait to use however I am still happy that my phone does what it was advertised to do when I bought it. Anything I get in addition to the features that came with the phone from when I bought it stock are welcomed. I can expect HTC/Sprint to fix any bugs in our current firmware version, but the fact that they are going to give us a upgrade to 2.1 is a bonus. I think I can be patient for them to go above and beyond to give us this upgrade.

We could and should complain if a our phones did not work as advertised and HTC/Sprint did not attempt to fix them with a update. I also think some us need to remember that firmware upgrades that "add" features to a product are not something that you pay for when you get a phone. You pay for the phone to work as advertised. I know I don't buy a expensive phone "hoping they will update it... then complaining when I am told when a update is coming... just because it is not coming as quick as I think it should.

Common! lets just be mad at EVERYONE and EVERYTHING because obviously 2.1 will come out sooner if we do that :)

For such a customizable platform people sure bitch alot. Most of that customization comes from the community. So why are we pissed? They released the code now so the community will once again give us that value added benefit that we really never paid for.

Flipz and others are quicker because they don't have to coordinate firmware/software/legal problems between three different companies for every change in code that is written. They don't have to go through extensive testing to release a new version to avoid these problems. They figure out most of the bugs, release a beta, we find the rest of the bugs, and then they have a full release; rinse and repeat.

Duh!

I do agree donations are a great way to support Flipz and all the other homebrew rom developers. I hope none of them get hired by Google, HTC, or Sprint; then they would have to jump through hoops to get us our updates (I very much appreciate their work!).
