Help Bloatware

I'm too scared to root.
But I HATE the bloatware apps that seem to autolaunch for no reason.
I know I don't use them but they keep popping up in Task Killer.
Worst culprits are: Telenav, Visual Voicemail, Amazon MP3.
Any way to stop these from launching on a stock device ?

Yeah, root your device and remove them

Or you can install the autostart app, it's lets you customize the autolaunch apps.

Rooting isn't to be feared or loathed. It does make certain things easier, removing bloatware among them. Find the one-click root, then might I suggest you get Titanium Backup and ROM Manager? Do some reading on these apps; you'll find them to be very worthwhile. Titanium Backup is great for trashing bloatware. Root Explorer, another good addition to one's phone, is also useful for getting rid of apps you don't want.

Dump the task killer; they're not such a good thing.

Don't be scared to root. There's even a root method that doesn't require a USB cable or PC. Be glad you don't have a Droid, you have to have super nerd status to root that thing.

Root + Titanium backup = no more bloatware.

What they said--Rooting the Vibrant was 1,000,000 x's easier than my MT3G Slide.

I could train my puppy to do it in a month it is that easy...you do not even have to flash roms if you do not want. ROoting the Vibrant just lets you remove things if you want (among other, deeper plusses). You do not need to worry about doing a ton of crazy programming/flashing/etc. by just rooting the stock rom.

I did it on day two of owning my phone. I had never attempted anything like that before and it was painless. If I can do it, anyone can.

Exactly, Very painless, very easier, by far much easier than rooting the MYT3G and the G1. I used 1 Click Lag Fix to root my phone and Titanium backup to remove the bloatware. It doesn't get much easier than that.

I posted this last week in another thread and didn't get a response, it looks like this is better suited here.

I finnaly rooted my SGS Vibrant, I'll be keeping it stock for no other reason than I don't have another fully functional phone available having sold 2 phones to get the Vibrant. I've also added lag fix and Launcher Pro, hence the profile and cool icons. My question is, will I miss out on any OTA upgrades such as Froyo and/or hotfixes if I begin to delete the crap ton of bloatware on the phone? (Telenav, mobiTV, Audio Postcard, Layar etc...)

I know that a simple root wont do anything more than make my phone more functional in the eyes of T-mobile, however screwing with the out of the box configuration might? At least that's my concern. It comes down to me not wanting to unroot and figure out haw to flash back to the original configuration, bloatware and all.

My understanding is that unless you install a custom ROM, you will not miss out on OTA updates. Now, some of those updates may disable root or a lag fix for example, but you should be fine otherwise. Go ahead and whack the bloatware.

Oh...and the bloatware will come back if it's a factory/carrier ROM update (such as Froyo).

Read up on how to disable root and make a full backup of your current ROM. ROM Manager is something worth looking into.

After downloading the recent Tmo OTA my phone wouldn't boot. I ended up warranty'ing and getting a new Vibrant cause I'm kinda of a noob. Though, I hear the lag fix is suspected to be the culprit.

It's far more likely the OTA update whacked your phone. I've seen it reported many times. You would have been able to restore it with Odin and the proper files and saved the hassle of returning it under warranty.

There's a lot of good information in the Vibrant Bible. You ought to do some reading:

Rooting will not hurt your phone. However, if you're not careful, depending on what you do it may be easier to screw something up due to the fact that rooting gives greater access to the operating system.

Nor will a lagfix hurt your phone. If you're a noob you can always use RyanZA's OCLF. I've never heard of it causing problems, at the very least problems that can't be rectified easily enough.

Read about Odin. It is your friend in times of trouble and bricking.
