Help Blocking mode with third party apps

Hi all,

I've been using blocking mode successfully with my GN2 (ATT). It quiets the ringer for calls, emails and gmail. But, the other night, a Whatsapp message *did* sound its normal notification sound while in blocking mode. I tested again, and it never gets stopped by blocking mode. I do have "disable notifications" selected in my configuration.

Has anyone else seen this? Does it work well with your third party apps that have notifications?

Bumping this to see if anyone else has an answer.

Not sure if it's the same across all carrier versions, but on the Sprint version, it states "...notifications for selected features will be disabled." So, I'm assuming that doesn't include notifications from non-OEM apps.

What's strange is, I'm using SMS popup to prevent the screen from waking up after every text message I receive, and have the notifications set through there, for text messages. I'm still using the stock messaging app, but blocking mode still blocks the sound notification for text messages.

Ultimately, I wish I had a definitive solution for you, but the wording in the statement leads me to believe that it only blocks notifications that are connected to the OEM apps on the phone.

I have found a way to do it.

You will need the LightFlow app (at least for galaxy S3 users its kind of a must have anyways)

after you got light flow:

1: In What's app:
- disable notification sounds for incoming messages(not in light flow, in whats app). set it to silent or disable at all

2: The go to light flow and:
- enable sound notifications for whats app
- set what ever notification sound you would like to have for whats app when blocking mode is NOT enabled
- under Sounds-->Volume control method-->tick "Android standard notification volume"

Now it you enable blocking mode, it also blocks what's app sounds and if blocking mode is disabled, everything is normal.

edit: oh and i do not have any affiliation with the light flow app or their developers!!! i just used it for changing lights and came across the sound feature by chance!!!

Am I missing something here, why not simply put your phone in Vibrate Mode or Silent Mode at night ??

you do. the fact that whatsapp sounds are not affected by the blocking mode is a big problem for people who want to mute notifications during the night but want to have calls getting through.

if you do want to get woken up by calls (job, family, what ever) but do not want to be disturbed by whatsApp messages, you have a prob, because normally whatsApp is not muted by blocking mode and you cannot just mute notifications separately from calls, unless you do some annoying setting change or even change sound files....stuff you dont wanna do twice a day.

OK, never saw that option, now a few things I noticed is, it cannot be added to the notification panel ?? and when enable it always shows in the ongoing notification panel ?? When set to always

Would be nice to disable from notification and allow to have the shortcut added to the panel.

Thanks a lot Tyler. I tried out Light Flow, but it seems to have funny impacts:

- it also enables talk back, even if talk back is disabled in the settings. Scared the heck out of me when a strange voice started reading my email
- it necessarily disables air view on my Note 2. Air View is what allows a lot of cool features with the stylus. The reason stated is that talk back can't be enabled at the same time as air view.

It's strange that this light flow seems to appear as talk back to the GN2. I think I would have liked Light Flow.

BTW, there is another solution (which I use): Bedtime. Its only good for calls, but it works well. It's a simple alarm clock view on the phone, and it also blocks all sounds/alerts/notifications. But it has a white list feature, where people on the white list get their calls through, while others remain silenced.
