Blocking SMS Messages?!?!

I'm getting a Droid Eris tomorrow and I had a question about the phone.
On my blackberry theres an option in Firewall to block SMS messages from numbers not stored in contacts....does the Eris have something similar to that?

i don't believe there is a function like that but i'm pretty sure you can have verizon block certain numbers directly.

I don't think there is an option natively on the Eris to do this, but I'm pretty sure I've seen an app in the market that blocks texts and calls from certain numbers. Check the market once you get the phone set up.

Handcent has this option in settings>security & privacy>filter settings>unknown number filter. Filter numbers that aren't in your contacts.
I haven't had the need to use this setting, so I'm not sure how it works or how well it works or if it works at all... :D Happy New Year!

I use the blacklist on Handcent for SMS I don't want to see. And the "send to voicemail" function on the Eris for numbers I don't want to talk to. They still come in as a missed call and I do have to program them in. They all go under my "ignore" contact. I can't block all phone calls coming in that aren't on my list because of my business.

Just out of curiosity - for any of you that replied with a suggested solution - does the method you suggested prevent you from SEEING the SMS, or prevent it from being DELIVERED to the phone?

Subtle difference (because in neither case would you see it), but I have a feeling that the OP might have been wondering about running over a monthly limit of texts: if the solution suggested merely filters (or deletes) the SMS message after it has arrived on the phone, then the carrier would count it as a "delivered" message, and any spam/harassment texts would still be counted in your monthly totals.

Anybody know?

It does not prevent the texts from reaching your phone. You simply don't see them. You go into Handcent/Settings/Privacy & Security. You can show blacklisted texts or delete them without seeing them.
