Bluetooth Headset Voice Dialing

I thought i was having problems with my bluetooth as well, thought my bluetooth didnt work, was disappointed that they didnt integrate bluetooth calling, should have been a simple feature to put in, makes it harder when your driving.

Once is enough, your other post in this thread hasn't disappeared.

i hadn't realized i already posted in this one... i've been trying to bring up awareness of google code and issues like this or this. so it has been posted a lot. anyways.... thanks for your smug and rude reply! no wonder everyone says this forums is littered with a few asses who don't know what it means to have a community of people trying to make something better for the good of all who use it!

After all is said and done.. you can complain about known issues as much as you want... it is actually doing something about it that helps!

I also know for a fact that EVERYONE reads EVERY post in a thread when they click on it too.... you must have found that fact somewhere as well!!!! :D

:) :trying to smile as nicely as i can right now:

To throw more fuel onto the fire, the DEVOUR has full blown voice dialing over bluetooth.
MOTOBLUR or not, its an Android Phone, its a Motorola phone and it has it.
AND to add further insult.... its meant to be the simpler and cheaper phone.
A lower cost alternative to the Moto DROID.
The DROID has been out about 6 months now, thats HALF A YEAR ALREADY.
When the H. E. Double Hockey sticks are they going to come out with this already.
New Jersey has banned touching the phone while driving. and the fines are quite high.
A bunch of other states have banned it already.
Come on Motorola, Android , Google someone, anyone give me frakking voice dial over bluetooth already.
And dont pee on my leg and tell me its raining by releasing a cheaper phone that does have the voice dial over bluetooth. I'm fired up now, I'm going to punch a kitten.
(no not really)

I've just purchased a Samsung Captivate from AT&T, being new to the smart phone world I was only setting my phone up when I noted a huge problem. I can't dial a phone number using my bluetooth headset. As I said I'm new to this smart phone world and in giving up my old Motorola SLVR L7 I felt I would be making a huge step forward it seems not at least not in ease of use. I am a little confused I have been reading every thing that I could for the last 3 days and have found very little about this problem until I reached this forum. Did I miss the boat and purchased the wrong phone? No one seem to be complaining about this issue these days or have they all just given in to the problem as not being solvable. I hope that I'm not the only person who was actually attempting to drive safely and programing my phone to do that for me. I read all sorts of what I feel to be truly stupid issues and complaints with smart phones but almost nothing about one of the safest things that you could do while driving pushing ONE button on your head set, speaking a name or place, and having the phone to dial it for you. This is made even more paramount for me since I enjoy a vehicle with a sick shift, just try to hold a phone and operate one. Anyway now that I have bought this pice of crap and have loaded several calling apps, been on the phone with AT&T for over and hour, sent 2 hours over 2 day a the AT&T store, I've never been able to get through the Samsung help line, have read and listed to more about the Android system and Samsung phones than I ever have wanted, is it possible to find a "SMART" phone that will let me push the button on my bluetooth head set and speak a name and have it to dial a phone number or is this just out of reach of modern technology and I should go back to using my SLVR L7? Thanks.:)
Please no snide remarks I am truly looking for help .

Welcome to the forums! Let me see if I can dig through this, I appologize ahead of time as I am a smarta$$ by default, but I've found that sometimes when one is frustrated by something that should be simple we don't look at the simple answer (I do this all the time). I have an OG Droid so I don't know about the Captivate, but I'll try.

1. You're probably not finding a lot of chatter on this mostly because it was solved in Android 2.1 or 2.1.1, somewhere in there. No, voice dial through bluetooth was origionally not native to the OS. Oversite? Maybe but it happens.

2. What kind of headset do you have. MOST do support voice dial but some do not. There might be something in the manual for your headset. I know I was frustrated with mine at first because you hit the button and it tells you how much battery you have. After a lot of frustration and getting sick of the default voice and trolling all kinds of fourms, I sat back and though..... RTFM!!!! DUH (Faceslap). Right there "Press and hold button for 2 sec for voice dial." I'm not saying your's is the same but I would start there. If that doesn't fix the problem then check back in and let us know what equipment you're using.

3. You have to have a speach to text installed. As you are saying you just got the phone I am assuming that you are not rooted so one should have come preinstalled on your phone. The easiest way to check is open a search and on the onscreen keyboard you should have a little icon that looks like a microphone (I don't know what the captivate OSK looks like but it should be there somewhere). If it's there you have a STT program. If not you can look in settings>Voice input & output. If you have a voice recognizer, it will be selectable. Or you can look in your aplications>all and see if you have an app called SoundBack. This should be native to a stock android phone but if not it's free in the market. Again come back and let us know what you find.

My iPhone does it. LMFAO.. on here trying to figure out deperately how to make my moms POS captivate do something an iPhone does with ease. Color me unimpressed with android in general.. Sigh.. all the people complaining here have a legitimate gripe. IMHO

I have a Galaxy S Captivate and a 2012 Chrysler 200 with built-in bluetooth support.

If I'm in my car, I press the "phone" button, then say "Call Cindy" and it works perfectly. This is a standard BT connection between the car and phone, right?

Apparently, the phone IS capable of voice dial contrary to what's being said here.

What does my car do that my headset does not do?

Any ideas?

Many cars will do it but most head sets won't do it completely. I have old headset with a galaxy 2 that will work if I launch the "vlingo" app that is used by the Galaxy 2 manually on the phone. IF the phone locks, on OS 2.3, the phone disables direct bluetooth activation and won't let the headset work thus defeating handsfree dialing( you must unlock the phone manually to dial again).

Anyone who says people are silly for wanting handsfree are just kids. Any business person has to make calls on their cell phone WHILE driving. Most states do not allow texting by law anymore AND dialing is considered texting BY LAW. In my states , it's a heavy fine and points. Voice dialing must be fully automated PER law! You can tap your ear piece to activate phone dialing and that's about it. Oddly, this was in MOST "dumb" phones 10 years ago but not in an almost desktop computer phone.

Geez...My Old moto Rzar did it 10 years ago...AND ANDROID still can't figure it out???

On the Glaxy 2 Vlingo(required dialer) is slow to start and frequently gets "lost" if the app is running in the background, so that it won't come 'forward' if you press your bluetooth earpiece. AND if the phone auto locks after 10-30 seconds? Forget it! it just won't make a call per the OS 2.2+ with the phone locked. This is a huge fail to me.

Odd, many of the incar systems somehow get around this problem....they avoid using Vlingo I assume. My car uses it's own phone book and dialing system. It only accesses the phone for the network.

BUT many people don't have blue tooth in their cars. They use bluetooth headsets. Can you work on this google/Android???? oh, and even their own wired earbuds won't activate voice calling!!! Crazy!

i had an old LG phone and an old blueant hands free, and all worked well with voice commands. i have updated to a samsung galaxy ace, so smart, me with a new phone, to go with this the kids bought me a blueant s3. now no voice command, it will pair but i have to touch buttons. how unsafe!!!!

yes i have read all the above comments but no real solution. aaahhhh

I had several Sprint (not android or smartphone) that did true handsfree voice dialing. push the button on the Bluetooth headset and speak the contract name or a number. when I changed to Verizon the first phone I got would not voice dial handsfree. After experimenting with several I was able to do it with that Droid 2 & a Motorola H720 headset. I recently upgraded(??) to a Droid Charge-- no handsfree dialing. I am going back to the store in the morning and do more testing. If cannot find one that will voicedial hands free I will go back to the Droid 2. I have used handsfree voicedial for over 90% of my calls for several years . I WILL NO have a phone that will no voicedial handsfree.

Has anyone found a way or App that will allow you to voice dial using a bluetooth headset. This is a basic bluetooth task yet the highly technical Droid doesn't come from Motorola with this simple function.
If your Droid is using Jellybean 4.1 and up your out of luck. ICS on down should have no problem. It's not the phone it's Android.
