Do I absolutely have to have a clean esn to flash my EVO 4G to boost mobile? Bought it from a friend pretty sure it was shut off on him like 2yrs ago.

well you will not get an answer from AF other then yes. having a bad esn and circumventing it will not be discussed here.

so once the esn has been cleared then you can flash your phone to boost. we do have a guide for it when you are ready

What ocnbrze said stands. But if it has already been flashed over to boost you do not have to do much. How to check?

Go over to the Boost Mobile site and put in to start a new account. When asked for the MEID of the phone put in the one that you'll see in Settings> About Phone. Not the one under the battery. If Boost accepts it then you're home (almost) free. If it doesn't then you'll have to find a way...
