Root [Boost Mobile] [GUIDE][MK5][WIP]Rooting MK5 4.3 for Newbies!

Does the ota timer itself? Like it nags you every 5mins about an update type of thing.

Also I'm not sure on kies. I have it installed, but if it is going to auto update I don't want to even use it, will the phone drivers stay put one you uninstall kies? I figured if you uninstalled kies it would in turn uninstall things it installed as well.

Update:
I have uninstalled Kies, and it uninstalled the drivers it had.
I found USB drivers listed for the Epic 4g Touch on samsungs site, but under the Samsung S3 there were no drivers, it said somthing about no data available or somthing.
So will these USB drivers I have instaleld also work on the Samsung S3?

There should have been a check box to not uninstall the drivers, but to just uninstall Kies. Reinstall Kies just to get the drivers again, then make sure to double check that the check box for the drivers is not checked when you uninstall Kies.

And the ota will nag as long as it thinks you need it still, so probably every time you turn on the phone. There is a thread addressing that and how to fix it.

I just delete it from cache folder then quickly except the download... it don't bug me again for a couple of weeks at least.

I never installed kies on my computer, and had just wiped and reinstalled from the hidden partition on my hard drive, so my old Samsung drivers were gone, when I first plugged my new s3 into it. It automatically connected after windows searched for the drivers. I would recommend going that route, thereby not having to deal with any kies bs. I promptly rooted and flashed jdsingle's Knox-free 4.3 and proceeded to get rid of the bloat, including kies. My phone never has any problems connecting to my pc, and connects very quickly compared to my old transform ultra. Win 7.

if I do this root method and want to download a custom Rom do I have to stay on 4.3 or can I downgrade?

You can flash any ROM you want, from any Android build number. Keyword is flash, as in from recovery. If you have the Knox bootloader, you must never ever use Odin to push a "return to stock" firmware that contains a previous bootloader.

do i uncheck F. reset time as well as auto reboot? im kind of unsure what it means by all partition options. that the regular options or is that just implying the re-partition check box?

F. Reset Time will be fine left checked. It just resets the flashing timer after the flash process is complete.

After you are rooted, can you and how would you check to see your flash counter and how would you check to see if you have the knox bootloader or the tripped flag for knox?

All that info is going to show on the screen when you are in download mode, accessed with Volume Down, Home, and Power all held at the same time. The first screen has a warning, ignore it and choose "yes" to proceed to the main download screen. The first few lines are self-explanatory and will include your flash count. If you have Knox, the last two lines will refer to Warranty Bit and Bootloader (I don't know the exact terminology since I am Knox free); the Warranty Bit line is the Knox flag and will show either zero or one. Zero means Knox has not been tripped, one means it has been tripped. If those last two lines are missing, congratulations on being Knox free!

I bought my s3 today from bestbuy and it still doesn't have the 4.3 update pre-installed. Just an fyi. My phone downloaded it but luckily I read this before installing it. Won't be making that mistake.

1st off, welcome to the S3 section. :)

It's nice to see someone doing some research on their phone before they start updating and modding stuff. ;)

There is a lot of information in this section and I would suggest that you take your time and read through the majority of it. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. :)

Thanks man. I definitely do my research before risking my device. A small amount of extra time at the beginning can save hours, and your device, in the long run. Good to see you're here. You were very helpful, and I believe still are, on the One SV. I just finally had to dump it. Not enough options for me on the ROM side of life. lol.

You're absolutely right. A little bit of homework can definitely save you some headaches. LOL!

Thanks and it's great to see you in this section now. You are going to love your S3. It's a great phone and we have a ton of ROMs to choose from. If you have any questions, post or send me a PM. I'll be more than happy to help if I can. :)

Bump. So is the Boost GS3's bootloader already unlocked? Or should I go through another process to unlock it if it is locked?

Apologies if this has been mentioned earlier.

Currently running the factory 4.4.2, and rooted now thanks to this guide on this new S3 (my last one went south :( ).

I noticed that surprisingly, this one does retain the hotspot functionality that Boost normally removed when I had my last phone. But whenever I try to enable it for testing it wants me to subscribe to something else. Is there a way to re-enable the functionality proper, like MOAR and StaticPower 4.3 has/had it?

Flash this. It will unlock the hotspot.

Gave that a try, in both odexed and deodexed modes. However, neither seem to work with the stock ROM, which I'd been stuck with for a while in trying to get the signal issues at home sorted. :(

Just going to have to wait till I can figure out what I'm going to do next about that. :(

Sorry about that. I assumed you were already running the 4.4.2 Kit Kat update. According to this thread title you're still on MK5. In that case your only hope would be if the MK3 hotspot fix will work. Odexed and deodexed versions are found here.
