Root [Boost Mobile] WORKING wifi tether setup

There is less of a risk then there was when you rooted your phone

Isn't that the darn truth! :D

I still don't understand why I need to risk bricking my phone and ruining my MMS and 4G to get it to work again, when (by principle) it should be a simpler matter like changing the app to use.

Flashing a ROM is easy peasy. Especially one that is confirmed working by so many people. How many threads do you see in here where people are asking for help with a bricked device? Not many if any at all. ;)

1) Download ROM and place on SD card
2) Boot into recovery
3) Make a backup with TWRP or CWM.
4) Factory reset, wipe cache, and Dalvik cache.
5) Flash the ROM
6) Reboot
7) PROFIT!

You may have to manually change your APN's to fix MMS but that's easy. Easier than all the stuff you've done so far to try and get wifi tether working for sure. :D

Here's a thread with all the info you need. Go to the OP and read. I have spelled out everything you'll need to do in order to get a ROM working. MOAR and Wicked Sensation are the 2 most popular right now for Touch Whiz users.

and M.O.A.R has wifi tether built in that worked with out changing any settings

Smith, you are a genius.. I got to tell you.. God bless you man. Finally I can give my daughter wifi at the house for her I-pod.. She was driving me mad...... I got a Samsung galaxy S3 on Boost Mobile with your Rooted Stock_MG2 recovery

So, at last... I finally get the recurring voice-mail problems sorted on my S3.

So I decide to give this a go again... looked up and used the Google Play link to WiFi Tether. Strangely, THIS TIME it actually has some of the settings that were talked about and listed.

And after turning it on, and scanning... it finally worked. My 3DS is recognized and successfully connecting, even in DS mode! :D

Well, I did have one little problem... after finishing testing, and exiting the tethering app, my regular Wifi doesn't work. Trying to reboot the phone now to see if it comes back. Might need to try the other wifi reload mode.

It takes a minute for the app to completely shut down to allow your regular wifi to turn back on... so make sure you wait for the app to completely stop tethering... Also the settings are for the treve mod that is listed in the opening post and not for the Google Play app, so that also might give you some differences

Damn it...

Didn't even try changing the settings at all, and yet today it chooses to refuse to work, again!

Feels like I'm banging my head against the wall trying to get this crap sorted.

Well, this is rich...

I managed to get this tethering to work exactly ONCE, and never again. Even wiping the data and cache from the app and following the settings posted here to get it to work hasn't got it to work ever again.

Seriously, this is some *expletive*. Why the hell does this have to be so damn hard?!

Sorry to hear... the treve mod wifi download that I posted gets downloaded 30-40 times every day, only a couple of people have posted any troubles...

I would have to suggest to do a restore of your first backup or even better do the Kies Odin restore...

But I would recommend to flash moar rom, that would be the easiest solution.

Treve mod never, ever worked for me on this phone. It only ever worked on my prior OneSV.

The first backup has already been deleted, in part because I finally got to address the problems I had with the voicemail.

You are aware that there are different treve mods right? the one posted on the OP you have tried it right? I'm sure you have, but just in case you haven't I figured I might make it known that there are few different treve mods out there.

I really wish I could help you but there's nothing more I can think of other than saying again flash moar rom, it will solve all your phone issues... Other than that I'm as lost as you are on the subject matter

this solution worked for me when i ran a debloated stock. i used it until i switched to moar rom. i know that both ways work

Smith is absolutely correct. There are several TreveMods out there. Make sure you are using the correct one. ;)

That doesn't matter.

No TrevE mod anywhere worked for me, ever, on the Galaxy S3. And the link in the OP refuses to work, because the link has this obnoxious adblock-blocking nonsense, so I had to find a mirror to even get the referenced version.

I've tried going to the coder's googlecode page, and even xda for different and/or newer builds of the WiFi tether. The last thing that worked was using the build off Google play, which worked... once. :bawling:

And frankly the advice to "flash another rom" ticks me off, because I don't see how that is going to actually help me. It doesn't make any sense to me.

You're are rooted right?
You have cwm/twrp installed right?
If so, you could have tested a custom rom in the time it took you to type your post (if you type as slow as I do)

Just because you don't understand something enough to make sense of it does not mean its wrong... Please give it a try for your own good. With moar rom (and many others) the wifi tether is built in (wired properly). It's not a third party app that IS NOT made for boost mobile's S3 that needs a mickey mouse setup for it to work.

Or just call up boost mobile and pay the extra $10/month for the wifi tether that it is built into the stock (which is wired properly).

Or keep having the issues you've been having for a couple months now, I know it's got to suck and be extremely frustrating. This is a great community that wants to help, we're not trying to lead you wrong. I wish you the best luck.

The advice to flash another ROM ticks you off??? WTH dude?? You came in here asking for help and these suggestions have been made because they are known to work.;)

The reason it has been recommended to flash another (custom) ROM is because they have the hacked Sprint wifi hotspots already integrated into most of them. Another HUGE plus about these custom ROMs like Wicked Sensations and MOAR is that they run MUCH MUCH better. The stock ROM is a joke when you compare it to the ones I've mentioned and the others I have added to my ROM and Mod thread.

Yes, I am rooted.

Yes, I was rather forced to install TWRP because all the forced wiping of the phone didn't do squat to fix the voicemail issues I was having.

And the reason I ask questions and why I am having problems understanding WHY I need to flash another rom on the phone, is because following advice like that blindly is why this 20gig (CECHB) PS3 right now is unrecoverable and won't let me boot past the recovery mode. :(

Boost finally has 4G starting to show up in my neighborhood, and can see it enable when I get off my home wifi (when the phone doesn't try to automatically hop on the home wifi again like I'm on a limited data plan, LOL). Everything I've read people say about these custom roms suggests that it'll break 4G AND MMS, and I really don't want to lose that now that I actually have it. :(

Not the tw based roms such as the ones suggested, everything works perfectly with our boost mobile S3 :)

I've been using moar instead of the newer 4.3 AOSP roms (which are awesome and faster/smoother) solely because I need my mms and highly desire 4g whenever I get the opportunity, that's why I paid $400 for this phone.

I don't know where you've been reading and getting your information. 99% of Sprint Touchwiz ROMs are fully functional. The only ROMs experiencing 4g issues are the AOSP ROMs (CM, AOKP etc) . This is all clearly stated in the ROM thread located in the sticky section.

As for flashing one of these ROMs blindly, you don't have to worry about that. I've spent hours in my thread writing tutorials so there is pretty much nothing left to chance. As long as you can follow the step by step instructions you'll be good to go.

I hope you get your problem worked out because you've been battling with it for awhile now and I know how frustrating that can be. Sometimes we have to come out of our comfort zone to achieve what we want and need. Thankfully you've got a lot of guys in here with years of experience who are willing to help you. ;)

I am a Virgin Mobile user and ever since I updated to 4.3 (build MK5), wireless tethering of any kind has ceased to function. I have tried just about everything. Is this the case with you guys and if so have you found a workaround?

I have not updated to 4.3 yet... so I have not done any testing...

I haven't heard many boost mobile folks receiving/taking the update other than jdsingle's modified version. I sure that's why we're a little slow at answering 4.3 stock questions... I wish I were more helpful.

I just upgraded to 4.3 using (jdsingle's modified version), and I lost wifi tether also. I've tried several variations, still no luck. Back to pdanet + bluetooth for the moment.
