Boot animation - BIOS screen v0.8

ardchoille

Android Expert
I've created a cool boot animation that mimics the BIOS screen of a desktop computer. This boot animation was designed for the htc Evo 4G but can easily be modified to fit any device.

Instructions:
1. Download the bootanimation-bios.zip file
2. Rename it to bootanimation.zip before placing it in the proper location

Changelog:
v. 0.9.1 (05/04/2011)
* added a progress bar to the second half of the boot animation
* edited desc.txt to slow the animation down a bit, looks much better

v. 0.9 (04/23/2011)
* reduced bootanimation.zip file size even more

v. 0.8 (04/21/2011)
* reduced bootanimation.zip file size

v. 0.7 (04/20/2011)
* initial public release

I couldn't get a working animated .gif file uploaded here. Could someone post an animation or video of this bootanimation?

didnt work.... black screen.... and just so you dont hafta ask, i know where they go, (system/media well, at least in my rom thats where they go) and i didnt rename it .zip.zip or anything like that. Ive changed my boot animation several times to several diff ones.... maybe im just tarded.... i dont think ill ever rule that possibility out

oddly, this is the boot animation i use. ive had it for a few mos now, works great(well the one ive had does at least, the new one you posted didnt) im at a loss....

Hmm.. I don't understand, it worked fine for me. Has anyone tried rebooting and trying it again? I did notice that the first reboot after applying this boot animation took a while, but after that everything was fine. Perhaps it's the fact that this boot animation is a bit large (2.7 MB).

EDIT: I've reduced the file size and the boot animation is much faster now. Please re-download and try the new version.

Is this a new one or the one from xda from 6 months ago? Or did yo adjust that one?
It's a new one. I took one of the ones I found on xda and changed all of the text to reflect the Evo 4G phone stats. Is it still not working? I have it working perfectly on 2 Evos here.

ill giver er a shot, is it in the same loc as b4?

worked just fine :) the animation ended pretty quickly tho and went to a black screen for a few seconds at the end, but it worked :)
Thank you for testing! Yeah, I removed a bit of cruft to make the zip file smaller. It was almost 3MB and I think that was what was keeping it from working for some folks. I'm glad it's working now :)

i attached my original zip file (which is prolly a huge mess lol)

I attached your boot animation to this post, try it and see if it works for you. I have a theory as to why it isn't working, but test it first.

dood, the folder inside the zip says animate... i thought it had to be part0 then part1 (if you have a part 1 that is)

No, the folders can have any name you want, just as long as the folder names in the desc.txt match the actual folder names. Did my kitty animation work for you?

nope:( it went to the standard android animation which is just a silverish text that says android which looks like a light is scrolling across it, same as if you remove the bootanimation.zip file entirely) dunno whats up with that... sorry if im being a pain in the uhhhhh wherever lol i have several boot anim's i switch to and from, so i know how to do it, im prolly missing something stupid, like usual lol

You're not being a pain, I just don't understand why this isn't working.

are you familiar with that really lame "android" silverey bootanimation? if not, go into media/system and rename your bootanimation to something else making it to where there technically isnt a bootanimation for it to find, and reboot. its just the word android that looks like a light is scrolling across it...

Yeah, I'm familiar with it. I actually used that as my boot animation on the Vibrant.

oh, sorry... didnt mean to insult the BA you used to use, but in comparison the new ba's just seem so much gooderer-rer ahhhh, intentional gross misspellings lol

No worries. Yeah, the newer boot animations are much better to look at. I think Google chose lame stuff because too much animation, or if the bootanimation file is too big, it either gets cut off or doesn't work at all.

Actually, you can remove all bootanimations from your phone and you home screen will appear a lot faster. Bootanimations aren't really needed and the system has to stop to show the animation before the home screen appears.

Likewise if the boot animation is too big, the system says "I haven't got all day!" and cuts it off and continues on its merry way.

Shutdown animations are even easier, it's just a folder full of files and the system shows them in order. Too bad they didn't use that same setup with boot animations.

where are the shutdown animation files? im gonna look, and potentially find them by the time you see this lol

I don't know where they are on the Evo 4G, haven't found them yet. But on the Samsung Vibrant they were in /system/media/video/shutdown. I tried putting shutdown animation images in that directory on my Evo 4G and it didn't work. It may require an xml file somewhere or maybe a tweak in an existing xml file.
