Help Boot Up Problem

I suppose luckily i got my new phone today, but on removing sim card from my old desire and sd card ( before i realised that i need a micro sim) and then re-inserting in Desire - my old phone won't boot up and is getting stuck on the Android screen - it is rooted and running dGB which i have never had a problem with.

What could i have done to cause this or is this just a huge coincidence

I really only removed battery and Sd, put sd in new phone, removed and reinseted both back to old phone turned back on.

Black screen with android in white lettering running across the screen

I would still like to be able to use my old phone if possible.

Any help appreciated

Try booting into recovery and wiping cache and dalvik.

Have you been moving apps to SD, or using something like Link2SD to move other stuff? The only thing I can think of is that putting the sd in the other phone changed something vital, but dGB generally doesn't rely on the sd card, which is what makes it strange.

I should have added that if you have a recent nandroid backup on the SD, you could try restoring that if clearing cache and dalvik doesn't fix it.

Many thanks I'll give that a go - probably generate a lot more questions as i'm no expert with this.

I did a titanium backup recently but not aware having done nandroid

ok, so i haven't used this in a while..

so i hold down vol and power on, i then down arrow to recovery ( further up screen says HBOOT.

I am now in clockworkMod v2.5.0.7

I then get 8 options

reboot system now
apply sd cardupdate zip
wipe data factory reset
wipe cache partition
install zip from sd
backup and restore
mounts and storage
advanced

Am i in the right place and where do i find wipe cache and dalvik - is it a sub menu under wipe cache partition

Ok i think i found them, was a bit worried that it wouldn't give me any further menu choices and maybe the wrong thing, but took the plunge

Rebooting now.....

Still seems to be the same - stuck on the android screen.

Hoping you can help further - would i have had to instigate a nandroid backup - if so probably not done in a year.

I take it, it shhould still boot up without a sim card installed

Did you find the wipe dalvik option? It's under "advanced" in CWM as I recall.

Taking a backup now won't help get the phone working, as it would restore the phone to a non-booting condition. Might be worth doing before a factory reset (Titanium Backup Pro should be able to extract data from it), but I'm hoping it won't come to that.

Yes, dGB should work without a card. Camera won't, and if you've moved any apps to SD they'll obviously be unavailable, but the phone should boot.

You've not used the app Link2sd to move more stuff to sd? That's the one way the card might become critical for the ROM.

I have used apps2Sd ( i think it was called) but not the specific one you mention. Is that likely to have the same effect or is the issue specific to that app.?

(i did find the wipe dalvik and wipe prior to ealier post)

If you've wiped dalvik that would deal with Link2sd. The app2sd app doesn't seem from the description to do much that isn't built in anyway.

Does it boot without the card?

Just to check: your recovery can see the contents of the SD card (just to be sure the card hasn't failed)?

Otherwise if you've wiped cache and dalvik, don't have a recent nandroid, all I can really think of is either flash the ROM again (without a wipe), or do a factory reset from recovery then see if it will boot. Flashing the ROM won't destroy any data, but I'll be really surprised if it works. If you've done a Titanium backup recently then the factory reset shouldn't lose you much.

All a bit of a puzzle.

Just to waste a minute or two first: pull the battery out and leave it out for a couple of minutes. Just to make sure that everything is fully discharged. Then see whether it will boot. I'm assuming that you've effectively done this already with pulling the card in and out, but just once to be certain.

I can see contents of sd card when inserted into laptop, so think card is ok.

I think i found a nandroid backup dated feb 12 - think that must be when i rooted.

Trying leaving the battery out for 5 mins now

Update
No joy with battery removal

So try next option - i thought that would be to reflash rom - surprised that you said you didn't think that would work

Hurrah - the factory reset as done the trick and got it re-booted.

Is Titanium restore straight forward?

Thanks for helping me get the phone working again

Titanium restore should be straightforward - very much so if you have the Pro (paid) version where you can do batch operations. Reinstall Titanium, go into the backup/restore tab and restore stuff.

If the batch operations are available, restore user apps and system data (it's the same ROM, so system data are OK to restore), read through the list and untick anything you don't want to restore, then tell it to run.

The reason I didn't expect reflashing the ROM to work was because I couldn't see how the ROM could have been damaged.

Glad it's going - shame we couldn't do it any other way.
