Bootanimation help

I've tried using rom toolbox, and it refuses to change my bootanimation. I've also tried doing it manually using instructions from a post here at androidforums. Still the boost logo... Would one of you smart people care to point a curious idiot in the right direction?

If your kernel don't support custom bootanimation.zip you won't be able to change it, unless you create the bootanimation into a .qmg file (not by just renaming the file extension ) or by adding custom bootanimation support to your rom. I can do that for you on any kernel/rom! (stock or custom). All you need is root access.

If you are running on the Stock Samsung ROM (including the Jelly Bean ones), they do not support the bootanimation.zip. Samsung has a proprietary thing involving the two files bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg. You can delete them or you can find ones to replace them (search on XDA). they are located in the /system/media on your phone so you need root access to get to them. When replacing them make sure you set the file attributes (read/write/execute permissions) to the same way the existing ones are.

Thank you guys for the response. I'm running a gc01 Stockified rom with the Agat source kernel. Is there any kernels that do have the zip support for bootanimation(that will work with current set up) ? I found a superman one that I would really like to check out.

I believe that once they finish the adjustments to the core functions of the recovery kernel, I believe that garwynn or Agat may add that support in. I do not do many boot animation stuff because I hardly ever have to reboot my phone anyways.

I can definitely help you with that. Just send me a copy of your bootanimation and ill be glad to make it work on your device (with current set up and kernel).

Hi,

Im having the same problem too.. I have a rooted device and I want to install a reboot screen, reason only because I updated my phone to 4.2.2 and the reboot screen that was installed was some Hot Mobile one in red so dont know where that came from...

When I go into System/media I have loads of files ending in .qmg like battery_wireless_charging_30.qmg, there are loads of them and then I have the 2 main ones bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg.

I would like to install a bootanimation.zip using the rom toolbox.

Is there a way of deleting those 2 bootsamsung and bootsamsungloop files and then moving the bootanimation.zip into that system/media file or is that still not going to work because of the extention?

Hope you tech guys can help me..

Thanks :) x

Well first off if you have updated to 4.2.2 then you are running a custom ROM. GC01 which is Boosts JB is 4.2.1

you need to look to see if you have an animation.zip file already. Yes, you can delete those files with a root file explorer. Unles your ROM supports it you can't just move a bootanimation.zip into the location.

Check this guide that is a sticky at the top of this forum.

Thanks for that link...

Long instructions, think I may just have to leave it..

I am using rom toolbox and no I do not already have bootanimation.zip only when I download a boot animation will I have bootanimation.zip which is saved in data/local

On previous forums I have read that I can simply move bootanimation.zip from data/local to system/media

also read somewhere about going into system/bin and renaming bootanimation to samsungani.

Tried all those things and nothing works. I have not actually rebooted phone but when I go back into rom toolbox and click 'current animation' after I have done everything it shows a black screen, so I just revert back to all the old settings.

So what you are saying is that because I have custom rom 4.2.2 I have to go through that long process on that link you sent me to change the boot screen?

Thanx

The boot animation can be in /system/media and the qmg files you want to remove are also there. Stock Samsung ROMs do not support bootanimation.zip and you have to use the guide the link in part #2 to enable that support. As for what ROM you have, what does your settings/about device show?

I know that 4.2.1 is the latest stock ROM officially released for our phones. I am curious as to which ROM you have.

Its running 4.2.2 now so have the new settings display like on S4 and Device status says custom- it did say official before I rooted it again.

Thanks

If you are running the S3, then you will likely have 4.2.2 stock. Had me wondering for a bit as this is the forum for the S2 and out last update was to 4.2.1

Okay well The Same should hold for the bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg both should be in /system/media

the instructions in the guide I linked to for adding support for the bootanimation.zip links back to this XDA thread, which is in the galaxy note 2 section. This method should work for most Samsung Roms, I know it works on the S2 under JB just fine.

You need to have a CWM recovery to use it and do make a nandroid before flashing in custom recovery.
