Root bootloader not recognizing PC36IMG

make sure that it is named PC36IMG.zip and not PC36IMG.zip.zip
also make sure that it is on the root directory of the sdcard (/sdcard/)

hi, can someone help? I'm trying to root my evo but the zip file (PC36IMG) isn't located. any ideas?

what PC36IMG are you trying to flash?

Go to the file location and make sure it reads PC36IMG.ZIP and not PC36IMG.ZIP.ZIP windows automatically adds a .zip to the fine name so if you manually added .zip to the file then you need to go back and rename your file to just PC36IMG and then send it to your phone and boot into recovery and your phone should ask if you want to update then hit yes. :D

Wait, before you continue, do you have link to the rooting method you're using? Let's make sure you're using an up-to-date one :).

Anyone using the new Radio, prl? I tried to change the pri 190 to PC36IMG.zip and restarted in bootloader but it didn't do anything do I need to flash that zip file like a Rom or kernel? I thought those radios, wimax, pris were images so you didn't flash you changed file name to PC36IMG.zip? Sorry akazabam walked me through the latest radio (2.15.00.04.08) I thought I would try 1.90 with the new radio and new prl currently on 1.77.

Okay, let's break it down a little bit:

1) Your internal memory is broken down into partitions, such as the system partition for the OS and boot files, the data partition for your data, etc. You can overwrite these partitions with img files. These are typically flashed from fastboot, but you can automate the process by flashing a collection of them to overwrite multiple partitions from hboot. To do this you must package these img files (or even just one file) into a special file that hboot will recognize. This is a PC36IMG.zip file. Inside of it, you will find the img files and a text file, which hboot uses to verify that these img files were designed for the particular phone, basically. When you boot to hboot with one of these files present, hboot will ask if you want to flash the file, and it will overwrite the partitions with whatever img files exist. In this particular case, you'd need a PC36IMG.zip file which contained the radio, pri, etc. img files. Renaming an img file will just create a file that hboot has no idea how to read.

2) Sometimes you don't want to flash an entire img to a partition. If you have a collection of files, which can be anything from an entire, bootable ROM to a single file, you can package these files into a zip file. This zip file must include a script. This file is meant for recovery. These are not img files. The files inside are exactly how you will see them if you boot up and look at them in a file explorer. The script in the zip will tell recovery where to copy each file or collection of files. In general, this isn't used for flashing firmware, such as the case with radio updates, but there is a way to tell it to do so. It is basically a combination of recovery and the hboot method (though no PC36IMG.zip file is present).

So, what you need is either a PC36IMG.zip that contains the radio and/or pri img files OR a recovery flashable zip that has been designed to flash such updates. The latter is probably a little easier.

I downloaded the PRI 1.90file from Calkins radio Wimax thread on xda. That is the image I renamed to PC36IMG.zip Do I need to use a different file?

Right, so that is the second case I was talking about. That file is meant to be flashed from recovery. If you rename it to PC36IMG.zip, hboot will not see it as a valid file, and won't know what to do with it. Put it on your card with the original name (you could keep PC36IMG.zip as the name, but trust me, you'd confuse the heck out of yourself later down the road), then reboot into recovery, and flash it.

I get it!!! I just have to be spoon fed! (Giant palm to the forehead):DThanks so much akazabam for your help, patience and the spoon.

No problem :). I understand it can be confusing, what with the many different ways we have of doing the same thing.
