Bootloader speculation

This comment was talked about in another topic on this atrix forum. I agree that it's very lame of Moto to go down this road. I'm still holding a "wait and see" attitude because we have no basis for comparison with Tegra. Could be easier to defeat the bootlock than previous moto phones, could be harder. We just don't know.

edit: It looks like motorola pulled the comment off the video, lol. Back-peddle all you want, the cat is out of the bag.

edit 2: OOOOH, this really steams me! So Moto has removed their comment from the video and saw fit to delete every comment in reference to it! My comment was highest rated for a couple days now and now it's gone! I watched the number of comments spiral up past a hundred, now it's down to far less than that. Real classy moto...

Pardon my ignorance, but no one has found a way around a locked bootloader? And, without bl access, a custom ROM can't be installed?

They have found a workaround for the bootlaoder. You can install custom roms just not kernels or that is the way it has been on the X and 2.

Ahhh i seeeeee :p

In the immortal word(s) of Stewie from Family Guy upon hearing the confirmed bootloader being locked:

"Blast!" :p

That said with all the heat they're catching on the interwebz I hope they keep their promise to loosen their stance moving forward. Still won't mean much for the Atrix /tear

Which sucks since the kernel is where a lot of gains are made for performance in custom ROMs and in Linux in general. Gingerbread has 2.6.35.x kernel but looks like we really need 2.6.36.x since it has Tegra2 optimizations.

Though in doing some research I don't find mention of Tegra at all in the changelogs from kernel version to kernel version. I did find Tegra mentioned all over the place in 2.6.37 but not before...

Even if custom ROM installation is possible, it looks to me like Motorola has created a good bit of custom software to provide the Android <-> Webtop integration. There's no guarantee any of that will be open source, and thus custom ROMs may not be able to legally redistribute it.

I'm sure it's a "don't care" to some, but if you're looking to take advantage of the Atrix dock/netbook accessories (I certainly am), you may be stuck with the stock ROM for quite some time regardless of how open the bootloader is.
