Root bootloader unlocked but no way I can enter recovery mode

Hi,
I wonder if somebody out there has the same problem I have.
I luckily managed to unlock my Wildfire S via HTCDEV as I want to be able to load custom roms into it.
And the luck just disappeared when I was trying to get recovery working.
My current software version is:
Android:2.3.5
Software number: 2.13.401.3

What I did so far:

1.- I tried to load recovery via “fastboot flash recovery recovery.img”
The process went ok, however I am not able to start recovery. After choosing recovery, HTC logo just appears forever (on the movie it is with usb plugged, but without it is the same issue)

2.- I tried to load recovery via sdcard – it failed.

CID incorrect
Update fail!
Press [POWER] to reboot.

I even tried the one above which was not giving “CID incorrect” error but still no luck of starting recovery : Stuck on HTC logo.

3.- I managed to root the phone via SuperOneClick v 2.3.3 and downloaded Rom Manager. Via rom Manager I flashed ClockworkMod recovery, it was successful but still rebooting the phone into recovery shows this annoying HTS logo.
Rom manager shows also the following info: Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 5.0.2.8

Am I the only guy out here with this problem? Is there a way to diagnose why it does not want to start recovery? Could something go wrong with unlocking the bootloader, even if I have “***UNLOCKED***” ?

I would appreciate any help here/ideas/directions.

Thx

Thx again, Yes I tried this method previously too - the same bad results.
What I noticed is that after I retrieved recovery.img file from original latest RUU and flashed via fastboot, then there is a small progress as at least I get something different than HTC logo (pic attached) but this is orginal recovery and not CWM recovery ....

Seems like these non original recovery are loaded properly but for some unknown reason can not be started... Maybe some developers could help here if there is a way to log something extra to see what is the real reson of not loading it?

Numbers might help, so I'll post a 'Me too' here.
Flashed CWM recovery 5.0.2.7 (and later 5.0.2.8).

Result: white screen of death.

Am I right to conclude that I have now a fully functional, but unrootable phone?

Cheers,

Han Holl

Moved this to the root section the folks here should be best qualified to give appropriate support on this :D.

Welcome to AF guys :D

You need a rooted phone to do that.
For me, booting into recovery was part of the rooting process.

Han Holl
Your right, you must be rooted to use Rom Manager to reboot into recovery.

Honestly, this sounds like something is wrong with your recovery partitions. Have you guys tried flashing your RUU (Rom Update Utilitiy)? This will format the whole phone, including the recovery partition. It will put stock recovery back on the phone.

Then try using the ClockworkMod PG716.img file.

Hi Bobdamnit, thanks for your advice.

I found a file on FileFactory.com (who seem rather reluctant to let you download anything for free) with a very long filename, that seems to correspond with my phone.
Is this the file you mean with 'your RUU' ?. In that case, it seems to be an .exe. I'm a Linux user, what can I do with it. Search for a Windows computer ?
Or are there other options. (It seems amazing to me, that on an Android forum everybody seems to assume that you run Windows).

Must I upgrade to premium on the filefactory, I don't seem to be able to get a free download. Or are there more forthcoming sites with the same repository ?

Cheers, and your help is much appreciated,

Han Holl

Your RUU is here somwhere:
FileFactory Folder View - Marvel

And yes, you will need a Windows computer. (Might I suggest a Virtual Machine?) You might be able to use Wine, but I wouldn't bet on it as you won't be able to install the drivers for your phone in Wine.

This is the only repository for RUU's. They are also more up to date than the RUU's on HTCDev. You don't need premium to download the RUU, but it will download at a limited transfer rate without premium and they make you jump through hoops to download it. (OMG Captcha's!)

Ok, thanks a lot. I found the RUU, they really _are_ annoying.

A virtual machine doesn't help me much, as I don't have a Windows copy to install on it. I'll risk my wife's computer, then.
(And how do you quote the message you're answering to ? I can't discover it, and feel mighty stupid about it).

There's no risk. Just make sure you have the drivers installed on your wifes computer. The drivers are found at www.htcdev.com. Then hook up your phone and follow the RUU instructions. Easy as pie.

Also, to quote someone, look at the post you want to quote. At the end of the post, in the lower right hand corner of the post there is a series of buttons that say "Quote", "+" "Share" "Thanks". Click the "Quote" button and it will quote the post you want to respond to.

Yes, now I _feel_ stupid. I looked in the wrong place.
I installed HTC Sync on my wife's computer, so I guess the drivers are all there.
I've used Linux for the last 25 years, but it seems that Android has a culture and infrastucture all of its own. I found Android Partitions Explained: boot, system, recovery, data, cache & misc to be quite useful.
I just started the RUU. Keeping fingers crossed.

Well, it failed, with error 155. Wrong image.
I must say there was a difference in filename:
I have:
RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.3_Radio_47.23c.35.3037_7.54.39.28M_release_236989_signed.exe
My telephone says:
Baseband version:
47.23c.35.3037H_7.54.39.28M

Notice the extra capital H. I thought it was just an omission, but apparently not.
Now I'm out of luck, until someone who has _exactly_ the same phone posts a RUU ?
And if I had a pristine phone, how would I go about creating such a RUU for the benefit of others ?

As far as the RUU, try to pick one region and carrier specific. I'm assuiming your from Europe, and all of Europe has GSM phones. I only work on the CDMA phones. So I really can't help you pick which RUU is correct for you.

If you want a bit more help, the general section over at XDA for the Wildfire S is usually pretty active. They focus on GSM, which you have, so they're a bit more knowledgeable. Try posting your problem there. They're great people who are always willing to help :)

HTC Wildfire S - xda-developers

As for making a RUU, I wouldn't even begin to know how. I can make ROM's, but making a RUU would be quite difficult I would think.

I myself am a Linux user. (Backtrack 5, Mint, and Slackware.) Have been for the last 5 years or so. But I always have a Windows build hidden away somewhere. You just never know when you'll need a Windows box.

Also, while Android is built from Linux, it was designed for use with Windows, as Windows is the current market share for operating systems. So, to market for the masses, they made it very simple to work with Android on a Windows machine. And, HTC did the same. You can't really blame them for it. They are just trying to make things easy for the most of us.

I really thank you for your advise.
I wasn't trying to blame anyone, just expressing mild surprise.
There is already a thread on xda-developers, but so far no one seems to have any useful suggestions, and then I discovered a couple of people with _exactly_ the same problem on this forum. The fact that you're not alone is always encouraging.
I'll see what I can discover over there.

I had the same problem , But as caro32 told me . I used WFS Manager , and it took me straight to clockwordmod recovery from where I executed the root.zip file

and voila .My phone was rooted
