Root Bought a rooted Eris...

...that replaced a water damaged moto droid, and I am mostly impressed it. It is running Kaos Froyo and has a few bugs, one of which I don't think I can live with. Besides the camera and GPS not functioning, when I am on a call, my side can go dead for a few seconds while the person on the other end continues talking. The call then reconnects and I have to explain what happened. This leads me to want to switch to one of the GB roms. I'm one who'd rather leave phones stock, but after being impressed with this little guy, I feel the Eris is much better off being rooted. I am a noob, but feel somewhat comfortable with the process after poking around this rooted device for a few days, so I feel it can get done.

Where do I start at this point? I don't know in which way the phone was originally rooted. Is there a way to find out? How do I remove 2.2? These are just a few questions to start. Thanks.

Turn the phone off and the hold volume up + power and it will boot into recovery.

Let us know if it says Amon_Ra or clockworkmod.

That is the undead call problem, from what you describe. User Erisuser1 found the solution to this problem, but one truly easy way is upgrade to one of the GB ROMs, all of which are much better than Kaos Froyo at this point.

I'm on vacation, but hopefully others can walk you through the steps to get CondemnedSoul's CM7 installed on your Eris. I think that's the best choice at this point.

After rebooting into recovery, on the Android System Recovery page, at the bottom it says:

Build : RA-eris-v1.6.2

I was pleasantly surprised with the upgraded performance with the Kaos rom over my stock Moto Droid. A GB rom should keep me more than happy with the Eris until March and my upgrade. I'm digging the form factor of the Eris. If only the screen was sharper (and okay, bigger) on my aging eyes, I wouldn't need a replacement.

I forgot to mention that the SD card was not included in the sale. I mounted the card that came from my Moto Droid. Would I need the original card to switch ROMs?

No, any SD card will do... as long as it has enough room for all your stuff ;)

When using Froyo or Gingerbread ROMs, it's best to stick with a single SD card (as opposed to swapping microSD cards around willy-nilly); that's because it can store apps in a folder named .android_secure on the SD card.

Ok, to upgrade, first download the ROM .zip file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030346

(Either the vanilla or the stripped version; I always run vanilla, though I am going to try the stripped version myself in a couple of days.)

Copy that .zip file to your SD card. Put it in the root, or top, directory of your SD card - do not put it in a folder, and do not unzip the file.

Restart in Recovery and do the following steps:

- Backup/Restore menu
- Nandroid backup (just in case)
- Press VolDn to go back to the main menu
- Wipe menu
- Wipe data/factory reset
- Wipe Dalvik cache
- Press VolDn to return to the main menu
- Flash zip file from SD card menu
- Choose the zip file that you copied to the SD card
- As long as there are no errors when it is complete, restart the phone.

You should be all set to go.

I would, as you are setting things up, go into settings->CyanogenMod settings->performance and check "lock home in memory" and "lock messaging in memory" (I think that's what they are called...) for better performance.

Thanks for the reply. I finally have found time to flash GB, but am stuck at the get go and could use some more assistance.

I've downloaded the .zip file. I'm Not sure how to transfer it to the SD card though. When I try to open MPLSetup in both File Manager and Astro I get "file type exe not found".

I'm guessing you downloaded the ROM onto your PC and are trying to move it now to your SD Card? Just attach your phone to your PC with your usb cable and in the notification pulldown where it says usb attached select that and choose to mount as disk drive. You'll then be able to access your sd card from your PC and can copy the ROM zip to your SD Card. Just remember to put the zip on the root of your sd card and don't place it inside any folders. I also suggest downloading scary alien's AFV app from the market to verify the md5sum with what's listed in the op of whichever ROM you decide to try out. Most of the ROMS list the md5sum in their op and this is a great way to ensure that you have a complete and good download to help avoid any problems with flashing or setting the rom up. Using Sacry's app is very easy. Just open the app, choose select file, pick the zip and calc md5sum. Then compare the results to what's in the op for the rom :) good luck and enjoy your new Eris!
