Of course they are gonna know that you using a smartphone!

Well 3g didn't work but at least I have edge and att didn't find out I'm using a smart phone. So now I'm happy having unlimited data.

Is that so? well thats great news then
. I dont understand why u not able to access 3G, but as long as you are happy with the edge, who cares 
In Settings>Wireless&networks>Mobile networks
there are many options that can stop you from using 3G, if 3G network is available in you area at all.
Introducing 3G (WCDMA/UMTS) network cost operators a lot of many, so what they did, at least in Europe, is they introduced 3g network only in cities (highly populated areas). The rest of the country has 2.5G (EDGE) network.
