Bought Eris-how much better will Passion be?

I didn't even hear about this other HTC droid phone until after I came home from the store with the Eris.

How much better will the Passion be than the Eris? Is it going to be a significant difference? Any list of potential features for this phone?

I have 30 days to take my handset back to Verizon-allegedly the Passion will be out this month so I could exchange it.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Jim

I`m in the same boat as you man. I ordered the Droid ( can`t wait till Monday), and now I`m hearing a black Friday launch for the Passion.
As far as specs go, it`s something like an android HD 2. I just can`t imagine Verizon pushing the droid so hard and then releasing this beast less than a month later though. Original speculation was Q1 2010.

It's still a rumor right now. Only the leaked photos everyone has seen are the only link that the Passion MAY exist. The HTC Passion/Dragon hasn't showed up in any Verizon database or passed any FCC tests (Unless HTC sneaked it thru somehow).

The RUMORS about the Passion are that it will have a 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, Android 2.0, HTC Sense UI (Like the Eris), have a larger screen than the Eris (or other Hero's), its coming to Verizon either Black Friday or Mid December, and it may be GSM not CDMA (which would mean no Verizon).

ALL OF THESE ARE RUMORS. Nothing firm, just talk. Only the photos of an unnamed phone with the provider and the name blanked out are the only tangible evidence the Passion/Dragon MAY exist.

All that being said..... I'm waiting on the HTC Passion! That's right, with the odds against me, and my Android fever at an unbelievable high (I've picked out about 90 apps from AndroLib.com that I want and I've never owned an Android phone), I'm waiting on a currently vaporware phone. WHY? Because if the rumors are true, this phone will ROCK!

For comparison for your question:
The Eris has a 528Mhz CPU, Android 1.5, HTC Sense UI. They may upgrade the Eris to Android 2.0, but the 528Mhz CPU may not handle the more complex OS like the 1Ghz Snapdragon should.

I will keep this handset until November 25th-if the Passion does not come out by then, I will take this back and reactivate my old Dare temporarily until this all gets sorted out. The Eris flies, but I heard the speed increase of the Snapdragon is about 3x the speed of the Eris. Also, the screen will be much larger which is definitely of interest to me.

We will see...:)

Why not just keep the Eris you have? There's always a better phone just around the bend and VZW is expected to release quite a few more in the coming months. You're gonna find that the Snapdragon is a battery killer. Then you'll return it and wait for the next one. Y'all wonder why they keep raising the cost on restock fees....yeah. Good luck.

I'm in the same boat. Waiting for the Passion. I think the reason why there is confusion about whether it will be CDMA or GSM is because you might see the same thing as you saw with ther Hero and Eris. The Dragon will be GSM while the Passion will be CDMA. But with a HTC name of Passion it only makes sense to be for Verizon when you consider the Eris was the Desire.
As for the pics. Yes it is a rumor. But some things to consider (just from looking at other companies HTC offerings). On the phone you see 5 bars of reception, just like Verizon phones (not 6 like sprint or 4 like ATT). Also the 3g icon on the phone is the same as the Eris (3g with 2 arrows underneath) where as Sprint has EV and ATT just 3G. The only other company with matching symbols is Tmobile (but again maybe 2 different models of phones). But then you have the 1 touch sensitive buttons along the bottom. Almost exactly like the Eris save the menu key and just like the Droid. I thought I heard somewhere the Droid line was supposed to have some resemblance from phone to phone.
As for the fanfare Verizon put on the Droid. Remember Droid is a LINE of phones and the motorola droid was the first. THe fanfare could be more about the line then the 1 phone. Whether people buy the Moto Droid or a HTC droid, Verizon still gets paid.
THats my 10 cents worth.

If you are thinking about buying a Droid phone right now (I know it's tempting) I would wait off for a little bit longer so we can see more about this phone.

I agree completely. That's why I'm waiting, checking 5 major cell phone websites daily (OK 3 or 4 times daily) to see if any new info has leaked.

Footnote: Can I say I LOVE FireFox "Open all in Tabs" function. I have those 5 websites in a single Bookmarks folder. I just right click the folder, Open All in Tabs...BRILLIANT!

totally right. people are saying how good the eris is, so forget about the next thing cause it won't be perfect. there will be slow camera problems or terrible battery life or lack of physical buttons or this that and the other. there HD2 isn't perfect and wouldn't be on android either, thing is huge but that's a good and bad thing. if you like something then stick with it. personally i have a laptop and a $8k living room theater so if I want to watch movies or play games i'm not gonna be caring too much if the phone i have is not the best on the market for doing those things.

I would recommend waiting for the Passion. I know there is always a better phone around the corner, but this is right around the corner.

I got the DROID on Friday. It is a nice phone (great screen, keyboard), but it is blocky and heavy, also I have not had a good experience with the call quality from my area. This is a deal breaker for me.

I just returned the HERO to Sprint (same as ERIS). Also a nice phone. Call quality was very good. But with the 528mhz processor is was laggy. This processor is much slower than the iPhone or DROID (A8 Cortex). The HTC Sense is very cool. 7 home screens, pinch to zoom.

So with the Passion you get the best of Android and the best of HTC.

I will hold onto my Droid and wait for the Passion.

The DROID camera is horrible. Is is so slow it is difficult to take a picture. My experience is consistant with the official reviews. I don't know how Verizon and Motorola let this happen, considering it was one of the selling points against the iPhone.

Have you tried the Eris camera? Breath of fresh air. It has all the white balance etc settings despite being 1.5 and takes quick and well focused pics.

TO anyone who has the Eris: Is it laggy at all? Does it have any other issues?

Ive had a few issues and am kind of upset.

1) I share an account with my g/f. If I turn my phone off and on again she gets a page from my phone automtically.

2)I downloaded Fartdroid app..lol yea its funny, but now randomly when my phone rings it farts over and over again...:)

3)Have had several crash issues with certain apps and widgets.

4)Semi hard to Navigate, since the battery sucks I like to turn off all the apps I dont need. Good luck browsing through all that stuff.

5)I bought on impulse, and had no idea about the Passion until now.

1. Can't help you with that. Unless, do you have any tracking software on your phone? May be an option of that software. Just a thought.

2. Still laughing. Thanks. But check check your Settings / Sound & Display / Ringtones to make sure the app didn't install a "NEW" ringtone.

3. More apps in the app store are 3rd party (not Google, HTC, etc). Some just don't cut it. Go to Androlib and see if other ppl are having trouble with the same apps.

4. Navigate? You mean the phone, or "turn by turn" navigation. Either way, if you are running multiple widgets, or using email push, it will slow your phone some. That's why I'm waiting in the HTC Passion.

5. See last sentence.

I would wait for the Passion. It will be night and day speed wise not to mention a higher resolution screen and android 2.0. I just got my droid today and may return within 30 days and wait to see if there is any more news. I like the sense UI and don't really like the droid hardware keyboard which makes it heavier and is something else to break.

Dont forget the passion will no doubt be a physically larger phone than the Eris...to me that is a deal breaker IMO.

Passion will have a 4.2 - 4.3 inch screen. Note that its going to be a LARGE phone. Much larger than Eris.

Specs are one thing but I dont want to carry around a huge phone with me.

Interesting issues on the size of Passion. I totally would love to go buy an Eris now, but part of me wants to wait to lay eyes on the Passion. But if I already know the specs are too big for me....hmmmmm. What do others think? Will it be too big? I mean, if I wanted to put a netbook in my pocket...

Wait til Nov 15th and buy an Eris. That's when their holiday return policy kicks in, and you'll have til Jan 13th for a return exchange. Buy then you'll know if/when the Passion is coming out or not.

Its not an issue, Its simply a preference. I hate carring aroung a large phone in my pocket. Ive used blackberries, the iphone, and a few other smart phones and most of the are just too big to carry around in your pocket IMO.

The Eris is the perfect "Pocket phone" IMO and it has all the features most need.

That's also when the new ETF applies for advanced devices...

I would just like to applaud everyone on this thread. No flaming or trolling, just honest opinions and answers. I recently picked up the droid since my contract was up and I couldn't stand my Storm 1 anymore. I LOVE ANDROID! and I love my Droid, does a ton of great things my Storm simply couldn't handle. The Passion looks sick and ill definitely be playing with it when it drops. Anywho, its just refreshing to see posters getting along in a civilized manner without all the flaming and fanboy cr@p. Seems like not only is Android a great open platform, but its users are open-minded as well. (see what i did there?) Good luck to all of you potential Passion users out there and I can't wait to see what Android has in store for us in the upcoming months/years. :)
