Help Brand new texting issue

HELP!!! I went into Manage Apps, hit the multitask key (thats the square made up of 4 boxes with the top left colored in, right?) and the ONLY thing that pops up is "sort by size" or "sort by name a-z". There is NOTHING about clearing data... am I doing something wrong?? I can't take not being able to type anything!!!
 
also, if i go through the individual app, than won't i lose all my info by clearing data? I tried it on one game app I had (coinpirates) and it reset the game to the begining. Is there a way to do this so I keep all my stuff? Or am I S.O.L.?
