Brand New user, help :/

BrittanyB

Newbie
Okay so I had a Palm Pixi for about eight months, and the thing was a nightmare. I had to get 4 of them. The last one, it was broken the second I opened the box, the ringer switch wouldn

Rooting is a piece of cake and takes minutes, also the new Rom are already on GB 2.3.4 and they work great with no lag at all, when you are ready, simply open a thread in the all things rooted section, and we will walk you through the process. Go to that section and read a few recent threads of members that have recently rooted and this way you will be familiar with what we are talking about. ;)

Thread moved to the root section. Once you root, I think you will be pleasantly surprised with your Sprint HTC Hero, though I never had too much trouble when it was stock.

My wife still has her Sprint Palm Pre and she always liked it, but it is starting to show its age. The power button is hard to press and the battery life is not so hot. She will be switching to an Android handset when I get my Sprint HTC EVO 3D. It is just a matter of her deciding which one she wants.

I just had to Root My Replacement Hero -
Z4Root - still works great.
Then Download Rom Manager - Flash Clockwork Recovery.....
MAKE A BACK UP...
Then...off to the races!

Okay, so I may sound really dumb lol, but what exactly does this mean

"Extract the Android SDK zip. Move the contents of the extracted zip to C:\
Your Android tools folder path should now be C:\android-sdk-windows\tools"

Extract, and zip files, I know I've heard of zip files before, am I just getting scared by the name?
...This is what I'm getting scared of 'cause I don't really know what I'm doing and I don't want to break the phone then be out of warranty.
Also, say something happened to the phone I have Total Equipment Protection, so say something happens, is it really hard to unroot my phone so that I can take it to them and get it fixed without them knowing?

Also what system is this phone running on now is it the 1.5?
Does anyone know the thread with the most up to date way to root, I looked but I didn't see anything higher than 2.1 I wanted to go to 2.2, not sure if it makes a huge difference.

I just really want my phone to perform as highly as possible.

...Would you guys say it'd be worth it to get it routed by a guy of Craigs List for $30 or is that even more risky in tour opinion?

I mean by my first question what excatly is a "zip file" and how do you "extract" one.
...Lol I should probably find a more tech savvy person to help me, grrr

More Risky....Learn to do it your self....

Google Search z4Root on your phones browser.
Download it.
Open the file using estrongs of other file manager and install.
Click....Permanent Root.
To Unroot click....unroot....

Same here, took 30 seconds to root with Z4Root, and then 30 minutes to set the phone up from scratch, without using any backups, wanted a fresh install of all my apps

FYI, I did not know you had to replace your Hero also, what happened to yours??

wait so z4root will do it all for me, I don't need to download things to my computer and hook my phone up by the usb port?
Then inside that app it has a option to root and unroot?

oh and how do I make the back up copy to make it revert to the old way, will it save right on my phone.
sorry if I'm being annoying, I'm like andriod challenged, like I said this is kinda my first actually "smart" smart phone lol

Don....this weekend -
Stopped charging....then just Died....

Brittany.....Go get the z4Root app....google search it on your phone RIGHT NOW....
Don and I will walk you through this.

I actually gotta run, i'm on my way out and since I just got the phone today the battery is almost dead, do you think you guys could help me tomorrow? I'd appreciate it so much :D
When doing this, is the risk of breaking it forever, a big risk?

When yours just stopped working, did Sprint give you an issue couse of the rooting, or cause it was dead couldn't tell?

Okay, sounds good. Someone I was talking to said "be careful doing it yourself, it's easy to brik your phone" But it was also a person I was talking to about having them do it for $30, who was probably just trying to make money.
Again thanks for the help.

I should be around tomorrow, not sure if one of you can help.
I feel like the guys at the repair center prob don't care so much that it is rooted, as corporate may.
If you don't think you'll be able to help tomorrow, could you possibly explain briefly how to make a back up?
...Is the back up so I can restore it to the old ways? Or is it just to save what I have on here, 'cause I really don't have much.
Thanks again.

Funny you said that, when I went to order my EVO at the store, I told the guy about my speaker, he said let me check it out, I said it is rooted, he said NP, LOL

Brittany yes we will be around tomorrow and walk you through it, then you have to take cat and i for a beer, LOL, I will also post you a few threads for you to read in the meantime, so you will be familiar with the process and what we are talking about, it is a breeze.

ZERO CHANCE.....rooting with z4Root.
I told him it was rooted he didn't care....

Even if your rooted, we can unroot your phone in minutes, don't sweat it, we will also make you make a back up of your Stock Rom so you can Nandroid right back with no issues.

And we can walk you through that to....it is also VERY easy

I would also recommend going with Z4Root. It is dead simple to do.

Before you root, you may want to read up a little on what it allows you to do and so forth. A little research goes a long way and DonB pointed you in the right direction with the links that he provided.

Thank you, I did read some of those thinges yesterday. I didn't read them all though, I will deffinantly look into them.
Thank you everyone for being so helpful.
I also looked for z4root in the app store but didn't see it, you said google it right? I can get apps places other than the app store?
...Sounds good if I'm understanding it right.

...I believe I understand rooting, at least what I want out of it. I really want the swype keyboard, and am happy to have access to that, also I know I'll be able to get a lot more apps. That it makes the phone ore customizable as well.
I'm excited I can't wait I hope this works for me. :D
Once again thank you all.

Oh and one off topic question, someone said that the phones memory is really bad, and that you can't download too many apps...
Anyone finding this to be true? If so I'll be a bit disapointed.

Upgrade 2.2 or higher and you can put Apps on your SD Card....Just buy a bigger SD Card.
I use 8GB....plenty.

You can usually find Z4Root by doing a search for "Z4Root 1.3 .apk" and then download that to your computer. You will have to copy it to your handset's microSD card via the USB cable too. After that you will need a file explorer app like EStrongs File Explorer and that is available in the Android Market. You navigate to the Z4Root .apk file on your microSD card using the file explorer and then install it. You can then run Z4Root from your app drawer and select permanent root. It may take a few minutes, and if it seems frozen, just back out of the program and reboot. If it really is frozen, just pull the battery, put it back in and restart. Then you can see if you are rooted, or just go back into Z4Root and attempt rooting again.

The Swype Keyboard is not free unless you are doing the beta, but that will expire at the end of the beta program, I believe. I personally prefer the SwiftKey Keyboard.

Here you go, it is in one of the threads I posted for you, Z4ROOT ONE CLICK

I also have an 8Gb card, and don't even have my apps on my SD card and have no issues with memory

You also don't need to bother searching on your Computer and transfering to your phone.
Just use your phones Browser.....and GOOGLE it!
: )
