Breakdown of phone memory use?

Hi,

My desire is constantly complaining of low space. I realise this is just something we HTC users have to live with but I was wondering how I can see exactly how much space is being taken up by each app/program etc. For example if 24% of my phones memory is taken by sms storage. According to the file manager app I have, there's only four apps remaining on my phones internal memory, and I can't remove them (android market etc). I'm desperate here, how can the same people who made such a great phone allow such an obvious flaw? There has to be a way to free up space! As far as I can tell, my phone memory should be almost empty.

P.s. I cleared the cache and data a few days ago, losing ALL my personal info so please don't suggest that.

Any help is much appreciated though, I'm desperate.

Go to Settings --> Applications --> Manage Applications. Select 'All' at the top and then sort by size.

You'll be able to see the worst application offenders.

Beyond that you can use 'Quick App Clean' from the store to check cache that applications are using. It is completely safe to clear the cache - clearing the data causes loss of your personal info. I often have 5Mb used by the Market and 4mb used by Tweetdeck.

I also use 'DiskUsage' to see if an uninstalled app has left some rubbish behind.

If you're using the stock Mail app, don't forget to go in there and delete the Trash. It can build up over time if you forget about it.

This does my fricking head in man! Every time i wanna install something "Low on space"! I dont think i can really clear anymore Cache than I've already done (Without loosing data i need). Wheres my old iphone gone lol.

I have the same problem, and it annoys me intensely. People are always suggesting minor fixes that only solves the problem temporarily. Eventually the phone memory will be back to low on space. I read somewhere that a factory reset is the only option, because apps you uninstall leaves junk on the phone memory. The problem with this is of course that you'll lose all of your data.

I used the app MyBackup to backup my phone data (contacts, settings, etc.) to the SD card. I used SMS Backup to backup all SMS to my gmail account. MyBackup also offers application backup, but without root access to your phone, you'll lose the Android Market link. Thus you'll not get any upgrades to the app unless you reinstall it from scratch. That is not acceptable in my case.

I'm ok with installing and setting up the apps manually again, but I hated the thought of doing all those Angry Birds levels over again. Luckily there exists apps that backs up your Angry Birds progress, and lets you restore them (Angry Birds backup and Angry Birds Seasons backup). I'll lose my Air Traffic Control high scores, but so be it.
