Ok, so i was planning on flashing to neat rom, but in anticipation of this i did a factory reset of my phone. I am running the latest siyah kernel. Now the samsung galaxy logo appears, then the phone just flashes grey, i can get into download mode so i'm not completely lost, but i don't have a clue what to do next. I tried all the hard and soft reset things to no avail. Can somebody please help me, i'm pretty desperate.

A factory reset shouldn't do that. All it does is restore default settings. Good news is your phone's not bricked as you have access to download mode.
As you were running Siyah can you get into CWM (vol up, home, power)? If so, and you have a nandroid backup, restore that.
If not, flash a new ROM via Odin:

no i can't get into recovery, but i can get into download. Just to be sure, thats all i have to do? That doesn't sound too bad at all so, thanks very much. But do i have to use an official ROM or can i use a custom one for this?
I did do a bit of research and it seems this is actually a common enough problem, and it started a few months back with the beta versions of siyah, which i stupidly used
