Help Bricked Phone Recovery/Prevention?

I just ordered my Mopho, and it should arrive here on friday. I'll probably end up rooting it and removing all the bloatware. May or may not deodex it; I'd like to learn about it a little more before I do that.

Anyways, In rooting my phone, I know that I run the risk of unintentionally bricking it.

What measures should I take to make sure I'm able to restore my phone if this happens? If I back my phone up on a SD card or my computer, would it be possible for me to wipe the bricked phone and restore it with the stock OS?

I apologize for any ignorance on my part. Like I said, my phone doesn't even come in the mail until friday and I've never owned a smartphone.
