Bricked Phone?

HTC Hero CDMA (Sprint)

When I first got the phone I manually rooted it and installed Fresh 2.x
Got tired of 2.x so I installed Cyanogen a week ago.

This last weekend I left my phone in the tent and we had record highs of 108*F heat index.

I tried turning on my phone yesterday (It was off for four days).

I'm at the HBoot 1.41 screen and it is asking to clear all user data.

If I hold volume down and press and release the power button I don't get a menu.

If I remove the battery, replace, hold down the home key and press and release the power button I am still at Clear Storage on the HBOOT screen and it loops there and won't push me to recovery mode. I have multiple backups I just need a way to try to restore it.

I'm hoping the heat didn't fry the internal memory (Wasn't in direct sunlight). Anybody have any ideas on what to try next?

If you are able to get it into HBOOT then it is technically not bricked. It sounds like the heating of the circuitry or battery might have caused something to go wonky.

You can try flashing the stock Android 2.1 RUU via HBOOT. You can find instructions on how to do that, along with the Android 2.1 RUU .zip file here: [RUU] Official 2.31.651.7 in ZIP Format, Flashable from Fastboot - xda-developers . Report back after you attempt this.

Followed the guide to a 'T' Same results.
Problem is step three doesn't act like I'm pressing a button. Tried it with old micro SD card with my data on it and tried it again with a fresh formated SD card.


  1. Simply rename this to HERCIMG.zip and place on the root of your SDCard.
  2. Power your phone completely off.
  3. Press and Hold VOL DOWN and POWER until your phone boots into HBoot mode.
  4. Wait for it to verify the zip, then click <ACTION> (Trackball) to update, or <SEND> (Green Call) to cancel.
When HBoot starts up it starts up with this screen

HERC XC
HBOOT-1.41.0000 (HERO20000)
MICROP-0110
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0104
RADIO-1.04.01.09.21
Sep 1 2009,19:18:45

CLEARSTORAGE
Delete all user data?
<ACTION> Yes
<SEND> No

When I say no the phone shuts off and comes back to this screen.
When I say yes then I get the "clear....." prompt.
Phone reboots to the exact same screen

This is both with and without the HERCIMG.zip on the MicroSD card.

Hoping I don't have to get a new phone but any other ideas?

Yikes. That does not sound very good, man. :(

If it is not letting you do anything and just returns you to HBOOT, perhaps it is bricked. I hope that someone else can chime in with a possible solution. :)

Yeah I'm pretty sure there is nothing I can do at this point. I'm just hoping somewhere someone has come across this and has found some obscure way of fixing it. You know the standing on your head while the planets are perfectly aligned kind of stuff.
