Help Broken Evo Charging Port Thread, Lets Track This Issue

So the same thing happened with my evo. Had to wiggle the micro usb cord to get a charge, sometimes had to position my phone too. Eventually it stopped charging. Went into the sprint store, they said I had to spend 100 dollars to get a replacement through Asurion. I ended up paying for this in the store. Got back home and emailed sprint saying how terrible the TEP plan was and asked what it was for if it didnt fix this kind of thing. Told them I had previous problems with getting phones fixed/replaced. Then ended it with im gonna end my service once this contract is up since im so disappointed at their service. Got two emails back saying they are going to give me 100$ credit on my phone bill. Hope this all works out for you guys too The emails pretty much said this:

truncated...

I mentioned this before, but I was told the week before Christmas that this was an acknowledged hardware defective issue by Sprint AND HTC. and is covered under the 1 year manufacturer warranty with free replacement of a refurbished model in store (pending quantities available). When I went into the store to get this done there were 4 other people in the building with the same issue on the Evo, they ran out of refurbs and had to order us some, it took 3 days. No charge.

Now, they pain in the butt part, the sales person did not know this and was charging me $35 for the replacement, which I was happy to pay as others have said it cost them much more (and I did not get the insurance). Butt, the head repair guy was working on some phones not 15' away, he yelled over to the sales guy that it was a manufacturer warranty replacement and there was no charge.

You might want to investigate this first. use the store locator to find a repair shop (not the one you went to first) and check in with them. tell the sales person what I just said and have them verify with the repair guy (if he is in, avoid lunch time, near opening time, and closing time, and weekends!!), you might walk out with a fresh refurb at no cost, with no delay. fyi they give you back your SD card and battery...

here is the location information for the store I had this done. you can give the sprint store their number if they have an issue (there was an email sent to them notifying of this resolution for this issue a week or two before christmas, I do not know if they will still have it).

i purchased mine from best buy about Nov 4 and it was hardware version 004. My charging port went bad last night 2-21-2011. I went to the sprint store in Indianapolis and they replaced my phone with a referb 002. I would like to know if the 002 screens are the same as the samsung epic 4g amoled screens? It would be cool. I know that htc switched to the sony super tft screens because of tight supply...

I sent my Evo 4G in for the charger port that loosened over a couple of months' time til I couldn't charge it at all (they even acknowledge that this is a known issue covered under warranty), and was charged $240 for so-called waterdamage that hadn't caused any problem and that I didn't want repaired.

And since I didn't have insurance (in 15 years of owning cell phones, I've never had a hardware issue) I had to buy a backup phone as well as pay for what should have been a warrantied repair.

I am quite sure I haven't had any actual water damage. It's possible that the sensor was triggered by the one or two times when I had my phone on the bathroom counter while in the shower waiting for an urgent call. I had no idea this could void my warranty, and it's hard to imagine that they can't tell from the sensors the difference between exposure to steam in a ventilated bathroom vs. dropping it in the toilet or leaving it out in the rain.)

None of the customer service or technical repair employees I spoke to treated me as an individual. Each repeated their policy as in a Kafka novel -- the sensor detected water damage which voided my warranty. They can't send me back my phone without repairing the "water damage." I even asked the 3rd or 4th customer service person who I could take this up with. Does she have a supervisor? She said, "No, we are all at the same level." WTF??

It took 2 days to get through to someone at the corporate office who finally had a reasonable solution --If the damage was my fault, I pay. If the issue was HTC's fault, they repair it for free.

I have not heard back from anyone since I originally spoke with the corporate employee, and had to pay the huge fee just to get my phone back as quickly as possible. I hope they will honor their offer to look into this. I do not know if I will actually get my money refunded even if they do see that I should not have had to pay for repairs. I was incredibly frustrated with all of the employees I spoke with until I got to the corporate level. This phone has a known issue with the mini-usb port of the first generation of phones. As I mentioned in the subject header, I pre-ordered, so got an early phone with the usb-port problem.

I haven't had this poor level of customer service in many years. I am over complaining about it, but I only hope that this helps others in this situation.

My Evo's charging port has been going bad for a few months and It finally broke on me. I took it to a sprint repair center and they took it apart and said they were going to have to replace it. They ordered me a refurb and I picked it up today. It looks brand new, no scratches or any physical damage that I can see. It does have light leakage but my old one had that too and it doesn't bother me too much.

However, when I made a phone call It sounded like the person on the other line was talking on speaker phone half way across the room. I had to jam the phone in my ear to hear what they was saying. So it looks like I will be going back to the sprint store tomorrow to try and get another phone cause this is going to drive me insane...

here is what the sprint guy will tell me.... it does not effect the functionality of the phone... you can still make calls.... I also have light leakage on the bottom between the touch keys and the front housing... i hate it.... Sprint will not repair or replace the phone or replace it with an epic 4g....

Totally agree about the port problem, my evo has been fixed once and now the same problem is happening again, I have insurance so im not worried but def is a htc problem, other than that the htc evo4g is the best phone i've ever owned.

Although I've been lucky, I've taken to using my old Moment's cable and charger. Loose fit, no strain, works great. If I can find a similar one sold popularly, I'll post back.

I still have the original purchase on launch day, I don't have insurance on it. All of a sudden this morning I noticed that it's not charging properly, have to fiddle with it. It's not terrible right now but it will get worse. Here is the thing, I don't have the equipment protection on this phone, will the warranty still cover it?

So I hope this helps but...I've had my 2nd EVO (a refurb 0003) for about four months, which is longer than I've had the original, and *knock on wood* I've not yet developed the problem. I got these upon recommendation from another thread and they put a lot less pressure on the port, so I'm thinking they're helping. Hope someone finds this useful.

I thought I had this problem until I noticed the little prongs that sticks up on the actual plug was mashed down. Tried my car charger and voila.. fits perfectly, so if you think youre having a port problem check the plug first.

I wonder if TEP covers a charger lol? Im so parsimonious  <<< serious question though

have ... errr... had a close to launch day phone. I just had to swap it out because it wouldn't charge due to the port issue. I have the insurance, so it just swapped out. I AM pretty careful with it so it hasn't been treated rough, yes I have dropped it but I am careful, have a case that could probably deflect a small caliber round .....lol .... and do whatever else I can (baggy when in the rain etc) to take care of it.

I have a problem with my evo too but I'm nost exactly sure its the same problem with it not charging or having a hard time charge. My problem right now is that when I plug in my charger my charge light goes on and when I unplug it the light still stays on and the phone still thinks it is charging. The charge light and charge icon wont go away until the phone gets low to the point where I get the message to charge my phone. This is really annoying since my battery now doesn't last as long as before, I can barely manage to get 6 hours of it now, before I was averaging around 23-25 hours :(

I didn't get insurance on the phone but I'm wondering if they will replace it or fix it with HTC 1 year warranty? I'm planning on taking the phone to a sprint store and see what they can tell me there on Monday or Tuesday hopefully if i can get out of work early enough.

Have you tried pulling down the notification bar and selecting the charging/usb icon? Mine did that for a bit, and that seemed to clear it.

Yea I have tried changing it from charge only to usb storage device but nothing seems to fix it, also on the same note, my pc doesn't recognize it as a storage device anymore. Every single pc I have tried plugging it into tells me that it doesn't recognize the device. Its a pain in the butt to transfer out photos and stuff, I have to use an app called WebSharing and it only allows me to select one item at a time to transfer from the phone to the pc. Went to the Suns vs Magic game yesterday and it took a while to transfer the pic and videos.

And thanks for the help too :)

If you're not task-killing the PC Sync process on the phone then that sounds like a shorted cable or a bad usb port...

Yea I'm pretty positive is going to be the usb port, I have multiple cables and even my co-workers cable are doing the same thing to the phone. I don't think I will be able to go to the store tonight and check it out but when I do I will post again with what ever information I get.

Looks like this has finally hit my girlfriends EVO tonight. I haven't got to look at her phone personally yet but she says the whole metal frame where the plug goes in is pushed into the phone.

We both got ours on launch day and this is the only real issue we've had with either one. We bought them at Best Buy and got their insurance but after reading some of the horror stories about that I'm reluctant to go to BB for a fix.

When I first read about this problem way back at release I thought sprint/htc was denying the claims under the manufactures warranty. Now that I've read posts from the last couple months, this policy looks to have changed now?

It looks like I may have better luck, and a shorter turn around time, going into a sprint store to see if they will do a swap under the manufactures warranty. Is that pretty much the consensus around here?

In the So. Cal. Sprint stores I've gone to, they do not deal with the manu warranty. I am glad I reread your post, because I assumed that she doesn't have insurance on the phone since you mentioned the warranty. But I'm confused. Isn't the insurance you bought at BB Sprint's insurance?

I hope so, since that is the easiest way to get this taken care of. I didn't have Sprint's insurance, and htc originally didn't honor the warranty.

Try going to a Sprint store where they do repairs and using insurance to swap it out. I hope she has an easy time of it. Please let us know how it goes.

Oh, well, might as well toss my name on the long list of users who have been stricken by this issue, too. I got my phone on launch day from Best Buy (pfft $100 mail in rebate? No thank you) and have never had a problem until this week.

Monday, I noticed that the phone was a bit wobbly in its usb port. Tonight, it finally went. Phone won't charge at all and I'm not one of those guys who has a backup battery cache or an external charger. Going to head to the Sprint Store later today and have them look at the problem.

I do have TEP on the phone, so I should be set. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Well so far so good for me. Took it into a Sprint store and since we didn't have the Sprint insurance plan they did the exchange for $35 like others have experienced. We'll have to wait a few days for the new one to come in though. We decided to go that route instead of going through BB.

Lesliegodwin, the BB insurance is not Sprint insurance. It's their "Black Tie" insurance policy that they sell with any electronics. It can be a nightmare because they take your item and ship it off to a facility somewhere. After they determine the problem they order parts, fix it, ship it back. The whole process can take a month or more. It will cover everything, but in this situation my GF would rather pay the $35 and get a new phone in a couple days rather then wait 4-6 weeks and deal with a junky loaner phone they give you.

In the meantime, we are swapping batteries between my phone and hers. Charge it in mine, swap it into hers.

I'm convinced that part of this problem is the cord that shipped with the phone. She used that one almost exclusively and I've used an aftermarket one from monoprice that fits much looser and doesn't cause more stress on the port.

So after delaying to going to the Spring Store I finally managed some time yesterday. I don't have insurance on my phone so I was a little worried that they might not be able to help me out but I was surprise they did, and very well. The service rep there told me he can take a look at it and try to trouble shoot it for $35 and if they couldn't do anything about it they would just get me another one!

When I got there my battery was pretty low so we couldn't duplicate the problem, the charging light staying on red for charging or green when fully charged until the battery gets too low and start flashing. He told me he would just get me another one but that they were back ordered and I would receive it by Friday, can't imagine how fast I would of received it if it wasn't back ordered lol.

Anyways, I just wanted to let people know how well I was treated at my Sprint Store in Chandler Az in case anyone else had any questions regarding the repair center here.

me and my sister have the evo 4g, me for one year, since launch and her since 3 months. i dont use the charger much anymore, didnt realize it was a big problem. i just recharge my batteries with a battery charging unit.

So you litereally remove your battery every time it needs a charge?
